11 Benefits of Almond Milk You Didn’t Know About

Those looking for a dairy-free milk substitute have probably stumbled across almond milk and wondered, “Is almond milk good for you?” Whether you’re a vegan, sensitive to milk or just don’t like the taste, almond milk is a fabulous alternative.

While almond milk is becoming more and more popular, it’s important to note that it doesn’t provide as much protein or calcium to be a complete substitute, so make sure you receive adequate amounts from other sources. One cup only has one gram of protein versus 8 grams in cow’s milk, and 2 milligrams of calcium versus 300 milligrams in cow’s milk.

As with everything you buy, make sure to check the labels and purchase almond milk that contains the least amount of preservatives and other additives.

11 Benefits of Almond Milk

1. It helps with weight management.
One cup of almond milk contains only 60 calories, as opposed to 146 calories in whole milk, 122 calories in 2 percent, 102 calories in 1 percent, and 86 calories in skim. It makes for a great substitute that will help you lose or maintain your current weight.

2. It keeps your heart healthy.
There’s no cholesterol or saturated fat in almond milk. It’s also low in sodium and high in healthy fats (such as omega fatty acids, typically found in fish), which helps to prevent high blood pressure and heart disease.

3. It keeps your bones strong
While it doesn’t offer as much calcium as cow’s milk, almond milk does offer 30 percent of the recommended daily amount, as well as 25 percent of the recommended amount of vitamin D, reducing your risk for arthritis and osteoporosis and improving your immune function. Plus, these two nutrients work together to provide healthy bones and teeth formation.

4. It keeps your skin glowing.
Almond milk contains 50 percent of the recommended daily amount of vitamin E, which contains antioxidant properties essential to your skin’s health, such as protecting it against sun damage.

5. It barely impacts your blood sugar.
Almond milk (with no additives) is low in carbs, which means it won’t significantly increase your blood sugar levels, reducing your risk for diabetes. Because of its low glycemic index, your body will use the carbs as energy so the sugars aren’t stored as fat (score!).

6. It contributes to muscle strength and healing.
Although almond milk only contains 1 gram of protein per serving, it contains plenty of B vitamins such as iron and riboflavin, both important for muscle growth and healing.

7. It keeps your digestion in check.
Almond milk contains almost one gram of fiber per serving, which is important for healthy digestion.

8. It doesn’t contain lactose.
Lactose intolerance impacts about 25% of the US population, which means they have difficulty digesting the sugar in cow’s milk. This makes almond milk a suitable, lactose-free substitute.

9. It tastes better than cow’s milk.
Almond milk doesn’t taste like cow’s milk, perfect for those who are turned off by the taste. It has its own unique flavor many describe as being light and crisp. Bonus: it’s versatile, meaning you can use it instead of cow’s milk in recipes that require it. It won’t have the same taste, but it will have the same consistency.

10. It doesn’t require refrigeration.
Knowing that you don’t have to refrigerate almond milk means you’ll be more likely to take it with you to work, or on a camping trip. It’s perfectly fine at room temperature which makes it a convenient, nutritious staple to pack, automatically upping your daily intake of all the fabulous nutrients above.

11. It’s easy to make.
Being that it’s a tad inconvenient to have a cow grazing in your backyard, almond milk is the convenient alternative to make at home. It’s made by finely grinding almonds and placing them in a blender with water, then filtering the pulp with a strainer to separate it from the liquid. Want to give it a try? Here’s a delicious almond milk recipe.

Amber Wellness Milk – with Carrots, Pecans, Turmeric, Cinnamon and Ginger

This tasty, health-boosting beverage is a spin-off of the popular “golden milk” and golden latte. It’s a fusion of vitamin rich juice and nourishing plant milk. It’s free of dairy and refined sweeteners, and is just loaded with antioxidants, beneficial nutrients, and immune system boosters. I created this yellow-orange sip to help keep myself and my little one healthy all year long, but especially during cold and flu season.

Whenever I feel a cold coming on, I either whip up a hot turmeric latte, or blend up this creamy and flavorful milk, and it always makes me feel a ton better. I either prevent the cold altogether, or if it had already taken a firm hold, it helps me get over it much faster. If it’s a real doozy, I reach for the garlic and load up my easy 10 minute cup of soup. We’ve heard it all before: frequent hand-washing, sleeping enough, and finding ways to handle everyday stress are always your first line of defense. Regularly sipping on beverages like golden milk and today’s amber milk, is like a little added insurance. It’s great way to supply your body with antioxidants, anti-inflammatory compounds, and other magical properties to not only ward off nasty germs, but to keep you feeling and looking your best for years to come.

Every ingredient in this creamy, spicy drink has numerous benefits to your well-being. Here are a few:

Turmeric: contains curcumin, which has powerful anti-inflammatory compounds and antioxidants. It’s good for your mood, brain, heart, skin, (basically your whole bod and all of it’s systems), for preventing cancer, treating arthritis, and for treating and preventing infections (aka that nasty bug going around the office).

Ginger: awesome for yucky feeling tummies, whether it’s indigestion, gas, motion-sickness, and is safe for pregnant women experiencing morning-sickness. Ginger has powerful anti-inflammatory compounds, and studies have shown it dramatically reduces arthritis pain and swelling. Studies have also shown promising anti-cancer effects in ginger. Many people find it helpful in getting over a cold faster, thanks to gingerol, the bioactive compound in ginger that fights infections.

Cinnamon: is packed with antioxidants, and studies have shown these polyphenols have strong anti-inflammatory properties (important for preventing all kinds of diseases). It’s been shown to be effective against cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases (like Parkinson’s), and bacterial and fungal infections. All cinnamon has health benefits, but for regular consumption in larger quantities, Ceylon cinnamon is the best choice. Ceylon cinnamon contains very little coumarin compared to Cassia cinnamon (the cinnamon that most of us use). Coumarin is a toxin that could potentially cause liver damage in large doses. For baking and sprinkling on things here and there, I use regular (Cassia) cinnamon, for making teas, lattes, and wellness “mylks” I use Ceylon cinnamon.

Carrots: great source of antioxidants, including (but not limited to) beta-carotene. They help slow down aging, promote healthier skin, and help prevent: cancer, heart disease, tooth decay, macular degeneration, and stroke.

Pecans: surprisingly, pecans are another antioxidant powerhouse, and are one of top 15 foods known for their antioxidant activity. Vitamin E, ellagic acid, beta-carotenes, lutein, and zeaxanthin defend your body from harmful free radicals, preventing chronic diseases, cancer, and infection. They are a good source of zinc, which is great for boosting the immune system and speeding up healing.

So what does it taste like? Ummm… Delicious! You can play around and add other spices like nutmeg and cardamom. I’ve never been a huge fan of straight carrot juice, but here it is very subtle and quite delicious. Grab your blender and start feeling your immunity super powers multiply. Those icky germs won’t stand a chance😛

Amber Wellness Milk – Carrot, Pecan, Turmeric, Cinnamon + Ginger

Inspired by my Turmeric Milk and this recipe

Ingredients

1 cup raw pecans, soaked for about 6 hours (use more for a creamier milk, less for a thinner milk)

3 cups of filtered water

3 medium organic carrots, peeled and chopped

1 inch piece of fresh ginger root, peeled

1 inch piece of fresh turmeric root, peeled

1-2 tsp Ceylon Cinnamon

3 soft medjool dates, pitted

a few black peppercorns (black pepper helps the body absorb nutrients in the turmeric)

I usually add extra ground turmeric and ginger as well – try adding an extra 1/2 – 1 tsp of each.

Directions: Blend on high for a minute or two and then strain through a nut milk bag or fine mesh strainer. Taste and add spices according to taste, blending again if you do. Sometimes I add a bit of nutmeg and cardamom too. Store in the fridge and consume within 2-3 days. Enjoy chilled.

This will work with a regular blender, but you may have to grate your raw carrot first. Keep in mind it doesn’t have to get completely smooth since you’ll be straining out the pulp anyway.

You can save the pulp to make other things, like crackers, if you are feeling resourceful and would rather not just dump it in the compost.

Here’s to staying healthy this fall and winter!

8 Reasons You Should Drink Spinach Juice

The trend of drinking vegetables juice is declining since soft drinks and packed juices have taken their place. A fresh fruit or vegetables juice contain the nutrients of a meal and also provide lots of health benefits as a bonus. One of the highly nutritious vegetables is spinach that provides more health benefits in a juice than the cooked meal. One ounce of spinach juice can be easily extracted from single cup of spinach. This rich source of plenty of nutrients should be given to the body once in a day. Some reasons that proof spinach juice best for health are given below:

Manganese:

There is no doubt about the large amount of manganese in spinach. The cells in body stay protected from getting damaged due to this benefit of spinach juice. The growth in bones is guaranteed with the daily intake of spinach juice.

Vitamin A, E, C, B1, B2, B6:

The pure juice of spinach comes as a large source of vitamin A. It helps to protect your vision and make a strong eye sight. One ounce of spinach juice a day is enough to meet the requirement of vitamin A for single day. Other than vitamin A, Spinach also contains vitamin E, C, B1, B2 and B6.

Vitamin K:

Spinach is a source of different types of vitamins. The vitamin K is also one of them. It allows a body to develop blood clot and regulates blood thickness. It can be a best alternative of blood-thickening medications without any side effects. However, ask your doctor first before taking it as an alternative of such medications.

Iron:

Spinach can be a best food to provide iron to the whole body. The deficiency of iron can cause many diseases and doesn’t keep a person active constantly. Therefore, the juice of one cup of spinach is enough to provide iron to the body for next 24 hours.

Phosphorous:

The strong teeth and bones can be possible through the proper intake of phosphorous in the body. You can get it from many other fruits and vegetables but spinach is also a best source of it. One glass juice of spinach juice contain higher amount of phosphorous.

Calcium:

It is not true that the dairy foods can only meet requirements of calcium in your body. You can maintain strong bones and teeth by consuming spinach juice regularly. This leafy vegetable is one of the major sources of calcium. If you can’t drink pure juice of spinach, add it with the carrot and beetroot juice.

Iodine:

We all know about the salty taste of spinach. This salt comes from the iodine included in this vegetable. The proper development of hormones is possible through taking sufficient amount of iodine.

Copper:

Prevention of infections and anti-microbial properties are present in copper. The spinach juice also contains some amount of copper. We mostly don’t focus on the deficiency of copper in the body. It is definitely necessary to take foods that fulfill the requirements of copper in the body.

HOW TO CLEANSE AND NOURISH YOUR CELLS WITH FRESH VEGETABLE JUICES

I am frequently requested to identify one thing which can be done immediately to get more healthy. With respect to food selections, the most effective idea I have would be to start drinking freshly pressed vegetable juices. Drinking only one newly pressed juice each day is a dependable means of infusing your body with a wide selection of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients that may protect your cells against disease and premature aging.

Nearly everybody who has studied nutrition can concur that newly pressed vegetable juices are tremendously favorable to human well-being. But few individuals make time to prepare and drink them often.

Making time to drink vegetable juices is not a difficulty for most folks. It is the time that’s necessary to wash vegetables that are fresh, feed them through a juicer that is good, and clean the juicer later that keeps most people from making fresh juices a routine portion of their lives.

So the initial step to integrating juicing in your life will be to completely comprehend making time to do it is among the top investments you can make and how great it’s for your wellbeing.

The Right Fixings

The secret to making vegetable juices that are healthful would be to make green vegetables the majority of every portion. Green vegetables will not spike your blood sugar and insulin amount like fruits and sweet vegetables like red beets and carrots will.

This really isn’t to imply that you just can not juice carrots, fruits, and red beets. Sweet root vegetables and fruits could be healthful improvements to your beverages, and they will undoubtedly add flavor and sweetness. You simply need to ensure they never make up more than one third of each glass that you just drink.

And when you are having issues controlling your blood glucose level, you will need to make use of a blood sugar monitor to find out how much is okay for you. I have worked with tons of diabetics over the years who haven’t been able to manage even an ounce of fruit, carrot, or red beet juice in their beverages without adverse health consequences, so please consider this point before you choose your ingredients for juicing.
Romaine lettuce is among the finest green vegetables which you can juice. You can juice other forms of green, leafy lettuce like green or red leaf lettuce.

For variety, try adding big smattering of Swiss chard, kale, collard greens, Bok Choy, and any other dark green vegetable that you just could steam before eating.

For another tier of flavor, you may add a miniature piece of lemon (including the rind for its flavonoids) to your vegetable juices.

Many people love including a clove of raw garlic for more morsel.

Be creative and add. You actually can not go wrong as long as you make sure not to use too many carrots, red beets, or fruits.

Certainly, organic vegetables are better than non-organic vegetables. But my experiences have led me to think the health benefits of drinking juices made with good washed, non-organic vegetables far outweigh not juicing. In the event you are not just unable to juice non-organic vegetables as a result of monetary or alternative life situation, it is still well worth your while to do this.

Preparing to Juice

Dunk all our vegetables at a great five minutes and we want to fill up the kitchen sink with cold water. Before we pull all of the vegetables out to sit in a colander to dry off a bit, we shake them about in the chilly water to ensure that we have removed any filth or even bugs that might be hiding in the vegetables, especially in heads of wild celery and lettuce.

We keep washed carrots and ribs of celery in containers full of water in the fridge if we are aware that we must make a couple of gallons of vegetable juice over several days.

We keep leaves of lettuce spread out and piled in a container with layers of paper towel in between each tier of lettuce to help absorb extra moisture. When kept in this manner fresh lettuce can survive an entire week or more.
If you are really pressed for time and need to make enough juice to last three to four days, you may make a huge mountain and keep it in an airtight container in the fridge – not of the same quality as drinking right after pressing, but still probably better than drinking store bought fruit juices or even vegetable cocktails like V8.

The Craft of Juicing

Juicing is, for the large part, fairly simple to do. You ensure your vegetables are not large or crunching – capable to fit through the feeding mechanism of your juicer, and you also shove on them in one at a time.

It is best to juice soft vegetables like leafy greens as they’re a bit more difficult to push through the extraction mechanics than more solid vegetables like celery and carrots. More solid vegetables like celery and carrots can in fact help shove on any touches of softer vegetables which are deep within the feeding tube of your juicer but not yet
Entirely through the extraction mechanism.

With leafy greens, we discover that before feeding them through the juicer, it is better to roll them up into little balls. This helps prevent a single leaf from getting stuck between the feeding tube of the plunger as well as your juicer that you just utilize to shove down the vegetables.

Fruits, like more solid vegetables, may be added close to the end, as you’re not likely to really have a issue with shoving them down and through the extraction mechanism together with the plunger.

In turn, the rats’ healthy or “good” cholesterol — high-density lipoprotein — increased with the coconut water diet. Results were promising, however, scientists concluded that a further long-term study of this finding on humans were necessary.

Using coconut water for weight loss makes sense because today, there are plenty of gym clubs that will advise you to drink coconut water post work out. About Ginger Root

Easy to locate in the produce section of most supermarkets in the U.S., ginger root is one of the most favored spices in the world. Grown throughout most tropical and subtropical regions, ginger is the underground root of the plant Zingiber officinale. Ginger owes its unique sweet and spicy flavor and aroma to several different essential oils:

  • Gingerol
  • Shogaol
  • Zingerone

Considered to be a valuable herb in several types of traditional medicines, ginger is used for:

  1. Improving digestion
  2. Boosting immunity
  3. Reducing inflammation
  4. Fighting pathogens (anti-parasitic, anti-fungal, antiviral and anti-bacterial)
  5. Easing asthma
  6. Aiding cardiovascular health
  7. Stopping nausea
  8. Relieving cold and flu symptoms

In addition, ginger root plays a valuable role in keeping the liver functioning optimally.

About Liver Health

The liver is an extremely underrated organ. We cannot live without our liver. The liver performs hundreds of vital functions, with some of the most important including:

  • detoxifying (cleansing) the blood
  • producing hormones and other substances needed by the body
  • digesting and metabolizing fat, carbohydrates and protein
  • storing and releasing energy

Liver disease progressively damages liver cells, which impedes all of these functions. Even if a person does not have liver disease, exposure to harmful toxins or excessive fat accumulation can injure liver cells. A healthy liver can typically regenerate new cells to replace damaged ones. However, damage from continual toxin or fat exposure can outpace the liver’s ability to regenerate – and liver scarring (fibrosis) can result.

Ginger Supports Liver Health

A daily cup of ginger root tea offers liver health benefits. Ginger’s spicy taste is indicative of its thermogenic properties, which improve blood circulation and the delivery of oxygen, minerals and vitamins to all cells in the body. In addition, ginger root naturally has a high antioxidant content, which reduces cellular damage.

  • Liver Fibrosis – According to a study published in the June 2011 issue of the journal Nutrition and Metabolism, ginger may protect against liver fibrosis. Researchers tested several extracts of ginger and found that all extracts increased levels of antioxidant enzymes used by the liver, including glutathione and superoxide dismutase. Thus, ginger has the capability to protect liver cells against damage by free radicals.
  • Fatty Liver – According to a study published in the January 2011 edition of the World Journal of Gastroenterology, ginger may protect against non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). A condition that affects an estimated 33 percent of American adults, NAFLD is associated with obesity and insulin resistance. The researchers believe that ginger may help prevent or treat this liver condition by reducing oxidative stress on the liver, decreasing insulin resistance and inhibiting inflammation – all contributing factors to NAFLD.
  • Fatty Liver – According to a study published in a March 2016 edition of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, ginger essential oils can reduce levels of fat accumulation in the liver. In an animal model, researchers found that administering ginger essential oils significantly reduced levels of fat accumulation in the liver. The researchers suggest that ginger essential oils are an effective dietary supplement to ameliorate NAFLD.

More About Ginger Root Tea

Brewing ginger root tea can be done in 3 simple steps:

  1. Peel and slice three to six slices of fresh ginger.
  2. Simmer ginger slices in two cups of water for approximately five to ten minutes.
  3. Strain and add honey to taste (if desired).

Although ginger root is considered extremely safe, it is not for everyone. Certain sensitive individuals may experience side effects such as heartburn, diarrhea and mouth irritation. In addition, those with a bleeding disorder or anyone taking blood thinners, diabetes medications or high blood pressure medications are advised to discuss daily ginger tea consumption with their physician.

Besides reducing inflammation in the body, stimulating digestion, aiding blood flow and boosting immunity, ginger protects the liver from scarring and fat accumulation. Thus, for a relatively low cost and minimal effort, incorporating ginger root tea into your routine can help improve overall health and promote optimal liver function.

Matcha Green Tea Health Benefits

What are Matcha Tea's Health Benefits?

Matcha is fast becoming known as the trendy new superfood and touted for its many health benefits far and wide. With it's high content of antioxidants and nutrients, amino acid's vitamins and minerals - it's no surprise at all that matcha has become the latest health food trend. From Dr Oz to Women's Fitness, it's hard to look outside without hearing about matcha and health.

Matcha brings with it a unique flavour combination of bitter and sweet. A sweetness that rendered it a 100% bona fide dessert ingredient and undertones of bitterness that cut through the sweet in the perfect, complementary way. I love matcha because it tastes amazing.

But it never occurred to me that matcha could be healthy.

I mean, finding something tasty that is also healthy is not an easy task. And don’t go kidding yourself that green tea sorbet is the healthy option to ice cream because of sugar.

About Matcha Green Tea

Matcha green tea was thrusted onto the world stage a few years ago as a trendy ingredient for bakers far and wide. Matcha ice cream, matcha fondant, matcha cupcakes, matcha cookies, even matcha whoopie pies.

The world went nuts for this new green powder, a small portion of which would not only produce a rich green appearance, but a distinct bitter/sweet taste that the food world fell head over heels in love with.

While its influence on the baking world was clear, not a lot was known about the actual health benefits of matcha. Thousands upon thousands of people were consuming matcha in food but little did they know that drinking matcha tea yielded health benefits that far surpassed any natural or manufactured health products on the market.

Research has found that matcha contains a catechin called epigallocatechin (EGCg). Catechins are highly potent antioxidants that have been associated with a number of health benefits including:

  • Boosting the antioxidant activity of plasma (which helps scavenge free radicals),
  • Dilating brachial artery (expanding blood vessels to improve blood flow)
  • Oxidising fat.

Now, let’s look at the health benefits of matcha green tea in details!

Why is Matcha Green Tea so Good for You?

1. Known as a Powerful Cancer Fighter

The most potent catechin found in matcha is epigallocatechin (EGCg), which makes up 60% of all catechins in matcha tea. This powerful anti-carcinogen is well known for its cancer-fighting properties and has been associated with reducing the risk of skin, esophagus, stomach, colon, pancreatic, lung, bladder, prostate and breast cancer.

In addition to cancer, matcha tea also possesses a number of properties that may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

While it’s not recommended that matcha or any kind of tea is used as the sole method for cancer or cardiovascular disease prevention, consuming a cup of (unsweetened) matcha tea a day is still recognised as being beneficial to overall wellbeing.

2. Matcha can Boost metabolism and burn fat

Can Matcha green tea aid in weight loss? Yup! Thermogenesis is the process of heat production in our bodies, and thus the way our bodies burn calories. The catechins in matcha tea boosts fat oxidation and increases thermogenesis from 8-10% to 30-40%. Matcha can actually help and promote weight loss.

Drinking matcha tea before a workout has been shown to boost thermogenesis and our body’s metabolism, increasing fat burning potential by 25%. Does that mean you need to workout less? NO. Don’t be lazy, but let the matcha help you workout.

3. Increases energy

The energy boost experienced after consuming matcha tea largely due to its caffeine content (about twice as much as a regular green tea) as well as a number of other nutrients, including L-theanine, a naturally occurring stress-relieving amino acid found in tea leaves that promotes relaxation without drowsiness, while improving cognition and attention.

Although matcha contains more caffeine than regular green tea, the L-theanine counteracts the usual effects of stimulants such as nervousness and wakefulness.

4. Improves mind and mood

L-theanine also enhances the production of dopamine and serotonin in our bodies, which helps improve our mood, enhance memory and increase our ability to concentrate. With five times more L-theanine than regular green tea, matcha not only gives you an energy boost, the presence of L-theanine also ensures your mind stays sharp when you need it, and helps you unwind when you don’t.

5. Detoxifier

Matcha tea plants are grown in the shade. In the weeks prior to harvest, the plants are covered to reduce direct access to sunlight, further enhancing the production of chlorophyll, a molecule that converts solar energy to cellular energy.  Chlorophyll is what produces the intense green colouring in matcha.
Chlorophyll is also known as a natural detoxifier, which helps flush heavy metals and other toxins from the body. With a high content of chlorophyll, matcha is great for body detoxification.

6. Lowers cholesterol

Though not scientifically proven, studies into populations who consume matcha green tea regularly have found a significant decrease in cholesterol-induced problems. This is believed to be a result of matcha tea containing lower levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol and higher levels of HDL (good) cholesterol.

7. Builds immunity

The catechins in matcha tea contain antibiotic properties that boost the immune system. In addition, matcha also contains a number of essential vitamins including calcium, iron, potassium, protein and vitamins A and C

8. Combats aging

In addition to the long list of benefits derived from the catechins in matcha tea, they also help slow down the aging process by combatting oxidation and inflammation.

We do love those catechins!

Matcha vs. other healthy food

Sure, we’ve given you a laundry list of matcha’s health benefits. But there are other superfoods out there, right? Goji berries, nuts, acai berries, heck - spinach? Popeye didn’t pop cans upon cans of the nasty green stuff for no reason. But then again, Popeye clearly didn’t know about matcha.

Looking at antioxidants per gram, matcha green tea comes out head and shoulders above the rest when compared with other health foods. Especially spinach.

Matcha vs Regular Green Tea

It’s been asked before and it’ll be asked again - what exactly is the difference between matcha green tea and regular green tea? Regular green tea yields its own health benefits and many drinkers already benefit from their daily cuppa. So why matcha?

The difference lies in the growth and production of matcha tea powder. As mentioned above, matcha plants are grown in the shade and then covered before harvest, enhancing its production of chlorophyll and amino acids. The harvested leaves are laid out to dry, de-veined and de-stemmed and finally ground to a fine powder - the final product we know as matcha.

The increased chlorophyll, amino acids as well as the concentration of green tea properties in powder form ensures that matcha is highly potent compared to regular green tea leaves.

In fact, one cup of matcha green tea has 4.3 times the amount of amino acids compared to regular brewed green tea, and the equivalent nutritional content of 10 cups of green tea.

Nutritional Facts for Celery Juice

Many raw food advocates sing the praises of juicing vegetables as a way of taking in a variety of nutrients and improving your health. Many people do not think of juice when it comes to celery, but celery juice offers vitamins and minerals as well as a different taste compared to other, more commonly available vegetable juices, including tomato and carrot juice.

Calories

A 1/2-cup serving of celery juice contains 40 calories. This number of calories is on par with the same volume of carrot juice. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Pyramid calls for you to consume three to five servings of vegetables each day, and drinking a serving of celery juice helps you meet that nutritional goal. Note, however, that one serving of vegetables equals a 3/4-cup portion of celery juice or other vegetable juices.

Macronutrients

Celery in its solid form contains little in the way of macronutrients, and the same is true of celery in juice form. One serving of celery juice contains no fat as well as 1 g of protein. Your eating plan should include 46 to 56 g of protein per day, so consider consuming celery juice with a meal containing a lean protein, such as chicken breast or tilapia, to bolster your protein intake. A serving of celery juice also provides 5 g of carbohydrates, just 3.8 percent of the 130 g of carbs your diet should include. The majority of the calories in a serving of celery juice comes from carbohydrates.

Vitamins and Minerals

Drink a serving of celery juice, and you will take in 16 percent of the vitamin C you need each day. The vitamin C in celery juice plays a critical role in bolstering your immune function as well as improving your body’s ability to heal wounds. You’ll get smaller amounts of iron and calcium – 6 percent and 1 percent of the daily recommended intake, respectively. This makes celery juice a good choice for contributing to the oxygenation of your body and bone health.

Health Benefits

Celery juice may protect your body from cancer. This vegetable is high in cancer-fighting compounds, including phthalides, polyacetylenes and coumarins. The Park Ridge Cardiology website notes that these nutrients may prevent tumor cells from growing, detoxify cancer-causing particles in your body and lower your risk of cellular mutations. The physicians at this practice recommend drinking 10 oz. of celery juice twice per day for its anti-cancer benefits.

Coconut Water for Weight Loss

Compared to other types of drinks, coconut water is low in calories, but it's not calorie-free. If you're looking for a natural drink to add to your weight-loss diet, coconut water makes a good choice, as long as you stick with the waters without any added juice or sugar. Always consult your doctor before going on any weight-loss diet.

Coconut water is the liquid you find when you open up a fresh coconut. In essence, coconut water is the actual juice of the coconut, not to be confused with coconut milk, which is a mixture of coconut water and coconut milk and is much higher in both calories and fat.

Coconut water without any other added ingredients is a low-calorie drink. One cup contains 45 calories, 0 grams of fat, 10 grams of carbs and 1 gram of protein. If you're lucky enough to get fresh coconut water, you'll also get some fiber, which is helpful when trying to control hunger on a weight-loss diet. One cup of fresh coconut water contains 2.6 grams of fiber.

The drink is also a rich source of a number of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, calcium, potassium, magnesium and manganese. However, the amounts vary greatly between the fresh juice and ready-to-drink coconut water, with fresh juice a better source of the minerals and ready-to-drink water a better source of vitamin C.

If drinking coconut water helps you create or maintain a negative calorie balance, then it may help you on your weight-loss diet. For example, if you drink 1 cup of coconut water instead of 1 cup of orange juice daily, you save almost 90 calories. If 1 pound of fat contains 3,500 calories, swapping your OJ for coconut water can help you lose 1 pound in about six weeks.

When drinking coconut water as part of a weight-loss plan, count and track the calories in the drink to stay on target. Coconut water is also a source of sodium, and the amount may vary from brand to brand. Sodium not only causes you to retain water, but getting too much in your diet may increase your risk of hypertension. Read food labels and go for the brands with less sodium

What are The Health Benefits of Raw Tomato Juice?

Tomato juice is such a staple in the western diet that we see a lot of brands come out with their own versions of the juice. Although store-bought tomato juice is healthy, it’s even healthier if you drink raw, freshly juiced tomatoes. Simply put, raw tomato juice is superior to any canned tomato juice!

Raw tomato juice provides all the important nutrients your body needs to function properly. It’s loaded with phytochemicals, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals! It’s like a full meal in itself.

Raw tomato juice is also considered a superfood because it’s rich in vitamin A, K, B1, B2, B3, B5, and B6! It’s also packed with a long list of minerals including magnesium, iron and phosphorous. All these compounds keep the organs healthy and the skin younger-looking! Let’s expound on the many health benefits of raw tomato juice.

Keeps the Digestive Tract Healthy

Tomato is packed with fiber. Juicing might take away tomatoes’ fiber content but adding the pulp back in should bring it back. The fiber in raw tomato juice keeps the gut and the liver healthy. The liver secretes various enzymes that break down the food we eat. And so, raw tomato juice keeps the digestive tract healthy. The fiber in the juice prevents constipation by regulating the bowel movement.

Aids in Weight Loss

Are you trying to lose weight? Start drinking raw tomato juice every chance you get! Raw tomato juice hydrates the body like no other. It’s also low in sodium, high in fiber and low in calories. Drinking raw tomato juice instead of sugar-laden drinks energizes the body without the empty calories. Even better, every glass of raw tomato juice gives your body a shot of nutrients to boost the metabolic rate!

Protects from Cancer

Just one glass of raw tomato juice is enough to supplement your body’s needs of antioxidants for the day.

The reason why tomatoes are red in color is due to its fat-soluble pigment called lycopene. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that protects from free radical damage. Free radicals are molecules that destroy healthy cells from within. This triggers the process of oxidation that leads to cell mutation. Oxidative damage is linked to all cancers, including colorectal, lung or breast cancer. Free radical damage also causes cardiovascular diseases and atherosclerosis.

Detoxifies Major Organs

Raw tomato juice is an effective detoxifier too! It boosts presence of chlorine and sulfur in the liver and kidneys. The liver and kidney are major organs that purify the blood. So to remain healthy, these organs have to be at their best.

Unfortunately, modern diet includes loads of processed, preservative-laden foods. These foods break down the organs and stress the liver and kidneys. Drinking detoxifying beverages help flush out the toxins in these organs. Raw tomato juice contains natural chlorine to boost liver and kidneys function. It also contains sulfur that protects from bacterial, fungal and viral infections.

Keeps the Skin Healthy

Want to look even younger? Try drinking a glass of raw tomato juice every day. It’s full of lycopene and vitamin C! Both compounds reverse the premature signs of aging. Even better, both compounds banish blemishes, fade discoloration and reduce oil production. Make it a habit to drink raw tomato juice to keep the skin clear and wrinkle free!

Carrot Juice for Cancer

Drinking carrot juice is one of the best ways to prevent cancer or fight cancer. According to the "Antioxidant Miracle," carrot juice provides powerful antioxidants that support health and the immune system. Eating raw or cooked carrots are great ways to obtain vitamins, minerals and even fiber, yet it would be difficult to consume enough carrots in your daily routine to meet your body's cancer prevention needs. The juice from 1 lb. of raw carrots makes one glass of juice.

Nutrients

Carrots contain the cartenoid alpha carotene, beta-carotene and potent antioxidants. Recent studies published in the "Antioxidant Miracle," indicate that alpha carotene is a more potent cancer preventative and fighter than even beta-carotene. Carrots contain one of the few cartenoids with pro Vitamin A activity, which means that the body converts the beta-carotene into Vitamin A as needed. In addition, carrots contain calcium pectate, a source of soluble fiber, Vitamin B-complex, C, D, E and K, iron, calcium and phosphorous and manganese.

Preparation

Remove the tops from the carrots. Use organic carrots for juicing to ensure that you do not introduce pesticides into your juice. Wash the organic carrots before juicing, but do not peel them. If you do not use organic carrots, wash them using a vegetable wash solution to remove pesticides and scrape the peel, if desired, before juicing. The authors from "Juicing for Life, recommend preparing carrot juice to work in combinations with other nutrient-filled vegetables, to boost nutrients to fight cancer.

Tips

Serve your juice immediately after juicing. According to "Juicing for Life," that is when the juice is at its peak for flavor and antioxidants. If you cannot drink your juice immediately, cover the glass and refrigerate the juice so that it does not oxidize. Begin and end juicing with the softest vegetables or fruits. For example, to create an apple-carrot cocktail, begin with half of the apple, then add the carrots next and end with the remaining half of the apple.

Prevent Cancer

Since cancer is a complex disease, preventing what causes cancer is equally as complex. From research taken from the "Antioxidant Miracle," one of the best cancer preventative methods is to juice not only raw carrots, but carrots in combination with foods that have equal cancer fighting properties such as ginger root, garlic, apples, celery, green peppers, onion, spinach and parsley. For a cleansing carrot juice drink, add a ¼-inch of fresh ginger, one peeled raw beet and half of an apple.

Fight Cancer

Authors from "Prescription for Cooking," recommend creating carrot juice cocktails that are beneficial as cancer fighters. Add to your carrots juiced collard greens, kale, parsley and spinach for additional sources of cancer fighting beta-carotene. To add more Vitamin C in your diet, add kale, parsley, green pepper or broccoli with two carrots daily. Since juicers do not juice bananas, avoid adding them to the juicer. Carrots blend well with nearly every other fruit and are as delicious as they are refreshing.

What Are the Benefits of Drinking Lemon Juice in the Morning?

Lemons have long been a popular ingredient in cooking, flavoring for sweets, and in drinks such as lemonade. Aside from this, regularly drinking lemon juice in the mornings can provide a whole range of health benefits.

Liver Detoxification

Drinking lemon juice regularly each morning helps to cleanse the liver. It does this by stimulating it to produce bile, which helps to break down food efficiently. By drinking it first thing in the morning, it prepares the liver for digestion throughout the day. It also helps to break down gallstones, which are made from calcified bile.

Better Digestion

In spite of its acidic content, if the juice of the lemon is diluted with hot water it helps to ease digestion and can relieve the symptoms of heartburn and indigestion. By combining with ginger, it can reduce gas and bloating. Lemon juice also can ease constipation.

Healthy Skin

Lemon is a natural antiseptic, therefore drinking it daily can help to remove blackheads and other forms of acne. Its high antioxidant level means it helps to prevent wrinkles from forming, as well. Wrinkles are caused by free radicals, which can damage otherwise healthy cells. Antioxidants destroy the free radicals responsible for this.

Weight Loss

Drinking lemon juice on an empty stomach first thing in the morning can help people who are trying to lose weight. By flushing out toxins and keeping the liver healthy and clean, it speeds up the metabolic rate of the body. This means that the liver metabolizes fat more efficiently, and the body burns fat faster causing weight loss.

Cold and Flu Prevention

Lemon juice contains vitamin C, an important antioxidant known to aid the prevention of infections, colds and flu. Vitamin C helps the body to absorb iron, which is essential to maintaining a healthy immune system, as it helps to form red blood cells and muscle protein. Another important property of vitamin C is that it destroys free radicals in the blood, which can cause inflammation and cell damage. Drinking lemon juice regularly helps to prevent these ailments.

Health Benefits of Raw Apple Juice

It might not be the most exciting drink option -- especially compared to exotic fruit and veggie juice blends -- but apple juice fits well into a balanced diet. Opting for raw juice helps you avoid nutrient loss that can occur during pasteurization and processing, so you'll get a glass that offers most of the same benefits as whole apples. Drink raw apple juice on its own, or use it as a base for smoothies and juice blends.

Natural Sugar for Energy

Raw apple juice comes packed with healthy sugars, including fructose, or fruit sugar. Each 1-cup serving of fresh-pressed raw apple juice offers 38 grams of total carbohydrates, with 28 grams from natural sugars. Your body absorbs the sugar in apple juice and converts it to glucose -- the primary source of energy for your muscles, brain and other tissues.

The sugar in juice absorbs and digests relatively quickly, which makes it a good option for almost-instant energy. If you're looking for more sustained energy, though, you're better off just eating an apple.

Vitamin C

Raw apple juice offers ample amounts of vitamin C and serves as a better vitamin C source than pasteurized apple juice. Each serving of raw apple juice contains 13 milligrams of vitamin C -- 21 percent of the daily value -- while an equivalent serving of canned or bottled apple juice provides just 2 milligrams. Getting enough vitamin C keeps your tissues strong by supporting collagen production, and vitamin C from your diet also protects your cells from toxic free radicals.

Beneficial Phytonutrients

Apples come loaded with beneficial compounds called phenols, which are concentrated in and around the skin of the fruit. If you make raw apple juice from whole apples, with the peel included, you'll get a juice rich in these same beneficial compounds. The phenolic compounds in apples offer antioxidant protection -- which means they neutralize toxic free radicals -- and they're linked to a lower risk of type-2 diabetes and heart disease, explains the Linus Pauling Institute. Red delicious apples are the richest sources of antioxidants, explains the the institute, so choose these to make your juice.

Using Raw Apple Juice

Because raw apple juice has not gone through bacteria-killing pasteurization, you'll need to be mindful of food safety to avoid food-borne illness. If possible, drink raw apple juice immediately after it's pressed to avoid contamination. If you're purchasing raw juice, make sure you store it in the fridge and drink it by the best-buy date.

Because of its relatively mild flavor, raw apple juice can act as a base for juices and smoothies. Blend the juice with spinach, kale and frozen pineapple for a healthful smoothie, or combine it with beet and carrot juice for a rich, earthy juice blend.

How to Lower Cholesterol With Goat's Milk

Although goat's milk is very similar to a cow's, there are differences that may make goat's milk a more healthy choice. One healthful benefit is that goat milk may help lower cholesterol. While the fat content of cow and goat milk is similar, goat milk contains about twice as many medium chain triglycerides (MCT), which are responsible for lowering cholesterol.

Substitute goat milk for cow milk in your diet. Because goat milk has a stronger flavor than cow's milk, you may want to mix both milk types before drinking it. Gradually increase the proportion of goat's milk until you are accustomed to the taste.

Choose low fat goat milk over full fat versions. While the type of fat in goat's milk may be more healthful, goat milk is still as high in fat as cow's milk. So, reduce your total fat intake by choosing low fat milk.

Select cheeses and yogurts made from goat's milk. These varieties are becoming more popular and easier to find. They offer a smooth texture and appealing flavor.
