Drink Water For Health: What Would Happen To Your Body If You Didn't Guzzle H2O Every Day?

Water does more for us than just quench our thirst to keep us feeling hydrated. It is one of the most vital substances for our body alongside air. Although drinking the recommended eight 8-ounce glasses of pure H2O a day seems unachievable for most of us, not getting enough water can compromise our health because so many bodily functions rely on it. While we can withstand weeks without food, we can only survive five to seven days without water, but what would happen to our bodies if we stopped drinking water?

In their latest video, “What If You Stopped Drinking Water?” Mitchell Moffit and Greggory Brown of AsapSCIENCE explain how soon we would begin to feel the effects of dehydration and what exactly those effects would be. Moffit and Brown explain the reason we feverishly look for water is because H2O is the most abundant molecule that makes up 65 percent of an adult. “As the universal solvent, it carries nutrients and hormones to the body, regulates body temperature, cushions the joints, and provides lubricants in our eyes,” according to the AsapSCIENCE video. However, as we produce 1.5 liters of urine every day, it is essential that the body replaces the liquid before it begins to shut down.

Completely depleting your body of water, even with fluids that contain water such as juice, coke, or tea, causes the brain to detect this change and creates the urge to drink something immediately. When we don’t drink water, we being to experience the initial signs of dehydration such as dry mouth, followed by dark urine with a strong odor. This signals the body’s attempt to conserve more fluids.

With one to two days of no fluids, we stop peeing altogether, have trouble swallowing, suffer from muscle spasms, and are more likely to experience nausea. The attention to digestion does not become a priority as victims become delirious and begin to suffer from severe brain function. Blood flow stops flowing to the skin, reduces heat loss, increases cork body temperature, and then gives us a bluish tint. Within three to five days, say Moffit and Brown, our organs and brain shut down.

Therefore, it is essential to keep our bodies hydrated with pure H2O, to keep our immune system functioning. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has already figured out how to turn urine into clean drinking water. As water is essential for our bodies, it’s important to fight for clean water availability for all.

Raise your glass of water for better health. Cheers!

The Truth About Green Tea And Weight Loss

Tea has been a well known weight loss drink for decades, low in calories and containing a variety of protein and enzymes that are beneficial to our health. Today we have a closer look at green tea. The relationship between green tea and weight loss is grabbing more media attention over the last few years.

In today’s society people seem to be constantly obsessing over their weight and the way they look. They continue to look for and try all sorts of radical methods to help them lose as much weight in as little time as possible. We’re living in an age in which faddy diets, crash diets, and celebrity endorsed supplements and programs are almost literally shoved in our faces by advertising companies, promising extreme weight loss in short periods of time. 9 times out of 10 these programs, supplements, and diets are not effective, and if they do result in people losing weight, they’re not considered healthy or viable.

In order to lose weight in a safe, healthy, and controlled fashion, we need to ensure that we’re consuming plenty of healthy, nutritionally balanced, natural foods and drinks, which are used in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle. Green tea for instance, is considered one of the healthiest beverages on the face of the earth, for a number of reasons, one of which being the fact that it helps us to lose weight. Here’s a look at how green tea and weight loss are related:

Green tea helps to mobilize fat from our fat cells

One of the things that makes green tea so effective for weight loss purposes is the fact that it actually helps to mobilize fat in our bodies from our fat cells. Green tea contains caffeine and antioxidants. It is both of these substances that can increase fat burning processes in your body as shown in a study here.

In order for body fat to be burned off, it must first be broken down in our fat cells where it is then transported into our bloodstreams. Studies have shown that caffeine assists in this fat burning process. It triggers lipolysis where it breaks down fat into fatty acids and releases them into the blood stream.

Antioxidants in green tea (namely EGCG) causes an increases the amount of the hormone norepinephrine which is used to send signals to the fat cells to burn and break down more fat, making fat burning hormones in our bodies that little bit more effective.

Not only does green tea help increase the fat burning process but it also helps reduce weight gain by stopping sugar getting into your fat cells, resulting in a reduction in body fat.

Green tea helps us to burn more fat during exercise

Obviously we all know that in order to burn fat we need to get plenty of physical exercise and activity. Well, if you were to take a look at some of these fat-burner supplements available on the market today, and you were to examine their ingredients, you would find that almost all of them contain some form of tea, or tea extract in there. Green tea has been found to be one of the most effective teas when it comes to burning fat during exercise. In one particular study, men who consumed green tea before exercising were found to burn 17% more body fat than those who didn’t consume any. Another study recently revealed that green tea can also increase the metabolism, meaning that not only do you burn more calories during exercise, but you also burn more when resting too.

Green Tea boosts metabolism

The rate in which the food we eat or drink is converted into energy is what we refer to as metabolism. Even when we sleep our body is constantly working and burning the calories in our food into energy. Our metabolic rate is just slower during rest and increases during exercise. Several studies have shown that green tea and weight loss occur as a result of the green tea containing compounds and enzymes that help boost metabolism, and therefore helping you burn more calories off your body.

green-tea-weight-loss-2

In a recent study from ncbi.com 60 obese subjects took green tea extracts and lost 7.3 pounds and burned 183 calories more per day.

Green tea naturally suppresses the appetite

Another key benefit of green tea and weight loss is the fact that it has been found to naturally suppress a person’s appetite. Studies have shown that green tea lowers a person’s blood sugar level, thus reducing cravings for foods. Obviously if we’re less hungry we will consume less food, and if we consume less food we will ingest fewer calories as a result. Not only does green tea suppress the appetite, it has also been found to help reduce hunger pains and cravings as well, meaning we’ll be less likely to cheat on our diets by craving unhealthy junk foods.

Green tea is a diuretic

Diuretics is the term given to drugs that help promote and increase the production of urine. Green tea is known to be a diuretic and removes unwanted and excess water from your body. This process helps you lose more water weight and makes your body feel less bloated.

Overall, there have been studies suggesting that green tea and weight loss are heavily related. However, the results are only mild and green tea alone should not be the only factor to consider when wanting to lose weight. Nevertheless, green tea also does have other health benefits and is a great substitute for drinks especially if you are on a low calorie diet or intermittent fasting diet. Just make sure to keep the full benefits of the green tea by refraining yourself from adding sugar or too much flavor to your tea.

10 Delicious Health Benefits of Strawberry – Reasons Why Strawberries Are Extremely Good For You And Your Body

Introduction

Loaded with impressive amount of vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber, no doubt why strawberries are among the most popular berries. From being freshly-picked berries to jams, anyone can easily access the nutritious strawberries all year round. This fruit, scientifically called as Fragaria X ananassa, is grown in temperate regions until they develop into red pulp with tiny seeds on the surface.

The United States Department of Agriculture or USDA suggests that there are only 32 calories for every 100 grams of strawberries. It comes with zero cholesterol and almost no fat.

However, it is a good source of carbohydrates with 6% of the daily-recommended intake. This is indeed important to supply the body with the much needed energy so organs can function normally and properly. The 2.0 grams or 5% DRI of dietary fiber is also helpful to improve bowel movement as well as blood glucose and cholesterol control.

Strawberries yields good amount of potassium, an important electrolyte that helps in the communication between the nerves and the muscles. It also curbs the damaging effect of sodium in the body particularly in the blood vessels.

Along with potassium are minerals including manganese, iron, magnesium, calcium, and zinc. Strawberries contribute 17% DRI of manganese, which assists in the synthesis of carbohydrates and proteins. It likewise keeps the bones strong. Iron, with 5% of the DRI, makes up the hemoglobin and is involved in the manufacture of new blood cells. The 3% DRI of magnesium found in strawberries, meanwhile, helps in the development of bones and muscle contraction. Calcium interacts with other minerals to perform its function in bone and tooth formation. Zinc is also involved in various enzyme activities as it protects the immune system.

All the aforementioned minerals are vital to achieve overall health. This could be obtained along with vitamins like C, E, K, B complex, and minimal amount of A.

Strawberries are high in vitamin C, an antioxidant that develops body resistance against infectious disease. Vitamin C’s importance in the body is grounded on the fact that it aids in iron absorption as well as in ensuring the health bones, muscle, and blood vessels.

Strawberries boast its supply of vitamin B complex, which includes Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, Pyridoxine, and Folates. This fruit is particularly high in folates, with 6% of the DRI. Folates are important in the production of red blood cells and in the development of genetic materials in the body.

Anthocyanins, a very special mineral, found in strawberries are powerful antioxidant that boosts the overall health of the heart. This antioxidant effectively avoids heart diseases through regulating the body’s cholesterol levels. This fruit also has anti-inflammatory compounds that support development of HDL or good cholesterol at the same time reduces LDL or the bad cholesterol. LDL cholesterol negatively affects heart functions. It does not only lead to excess fat storage but also damages the arteries. Regular consumption of strawberries will assure that cholesterol level in the body is normalized. Its polyphenol content also assures that blood flow from and to the heart is proper. There are also studies that conclude that strawberries have the ability of decreasing homocysteine levels that is the cause of damages in the arteries’ inner linings. On top of that, this delicate fruit is also rich in fiber and potassium that boosts overall heart health.

Strawberries contain quertecin which is an anti-inflammatory compound that subside effects of allergies such as asthma, runny nose, hives, and watery eyes. Quertecin is one of the special properties that this fruit has because it is rarely found in others.

Suppresses Depression

Depression is caused by too much homocysteine in the body which stops nutrients and blood to be absorbed by the brain. Strawberries have Folate which prevents maintenance and development of homocysteine in the body. Homocysteine interferes with the production of serotonin which is known to be the happy hormones. Homocysteine does not only affect mood but also affects appetite and sleeping patterns. If you want to drop the mood swings, eating strawberries can help.

Strawberries are one of the fruits that have the lowest glycemic index which is only 40.

Constipation is caused by improper digestion. Because of the fiber content of strawberries, it is able to normalize the digestive process. It allows food intake to break down accordingly. It also assures that food intake is digested and wasted properly and quickly. Regular intake of strawberries results to regular bowel movement thus avoiding constipation.

Strawberries are very popular because of its powerful antioxidants. These antioxidants prevent and eliminate free radicals and their very undesirable effects. Free radicals cause irregularities in the body. It inhibits tumor growth and heart ailments. This is why eating strawberries reduces risks of different types of cancer.

Alleviates Degenerative Functions

As mentioned above, strawberries are excellent sources of folate. Folate benefits the body in many ways possible.  Sufficient amounts of folate in the body defy ageing and its deteriorating effects in many aspects of the health. Lack of folate causes vascular diseases, atherosclerosis, and cognitive dysfunction. Make sure to always eat strawberries to replenish the body with Folic Acid.

Good for the Bones

Strawberries also have significantly high potassium content. High-potassium diet is proven to support development of bones through maintaining and retaining calcium storage. As we age, the bones tend to weaken. If you want to keep your bones healthy and strong, eating strawberries on a daily basis is of much significance. This fruit prevents bone breakdown and bone loss.

Strawberries suffice the daily Vitamin C requirement of the body. Vitamin C has positive effects in stress management. In fact, a cup of this fruit provides more than 100% of the Vitamin C demand of the body in a day. Vitamin C is much needed especially when under so much stress because when stressed, the body consumes more Vitamin C than usual. When you eat great sources of Vitamin C, blood pressure is regulated thus hypertension is prevented. This will result to better stress management ability of the body.

Regulates Blood Pressure

Strawberries are rich in potassium which explains why they are highly recommended to those with high blood pressure. Sodium negatively affects the body and is primarily responsible for high blood pressure. The potassium content of this fruit helps in negating the effects of sodium. And if your body does not meet the required potassium intake, the more it is exposed to high blood pressure. Foods rich in potassium are highly advantageous to the entirety of the human health. 10 healthy living tips for teenagers (Parents should read it too)

Teenagers have a lot of challenges to face and unfortunately obesity is one of them. The good news is that there are ways to deal with the situation but you (as a teenager) will have to make that extra step. We have gathered below the most important causes of obesity for teenagers and we suggest ways to make the turn to a healthier lifestyle. If you are a parent, you can also benefit from these tips and be in a better position to help your kids.

10 Weight loss tips for teenagers

I have recently returned to university as a student and I was really dreading the first day. I kept thinking how observant, picky, and critical young people can be, they can shred your confidence into pieces and off you go from the ‘cool people’ corner.

Yes I am old enough to eventually say I am so glad that all these issues can feel trivial (eventually). However, for teenagers all these experiences can be a nightmare and body consciousness is a big thing. University is not too bad and you can be lost in the crowd, but in a small environment like high school it can make or break your time there.

Nowadays there is constant pressure about looks and body image, with magazines, clothes companies, media adverts selling a ‘how you must look’. It is even worst in an era in which childhood obesity is increasing and kids hit puberty with all the extra pounds from the extra sweets they consumed the years prior.

Once you are there it all can be hard work, dealing with puberty and all that it brings (hormones, hair, mood swings), adapting in new environments and losing weight. Where to start? Well, bellow I have gathered a few tips which can help you get in the right track.

1# Don’t despair

So you used to be a skinny child and come puberty your body changes or you can’t shift the puppy fat and so on? This is all normal for puberty; during this time your hormones will start changing for both boys and girls. Basically your body is in the transition of becoming an adult, and girls will start getting their menstrual cycle and boys will be hit by facial hair and deeper voices and so on.

The bad news is that due to all these hormone changes, you will start to accumulate fat easier and in places which you wouldn’t before (i.e. hips for girls).

The good news is that you are still a young person and you are developing and your metabolism is faster than an adult’s. So although you will not be able to get away with the extra sweets and calories you consumed in childhood, you should be able to shift it faster than the adults. So don’t despair.

2# Avoid fad and fast.

At your age the last thing you want to do is work hard, right? If a diet can make you look amazing in 1 week and especially if it promises you can eat anything you want why go for the long dragging healthy eating?

I’m sure this will be hardest point to convince you but don’t go for the fast and easy. First half of the fad diets don’t work. Yes you lose some pounds but it’s mainly water and it will come back. Secondly, they are not good for you, trust me on that.

Your body is still developing so you do need all nutrients and you do need energy to grow and carry a busy, for most, schedule. Commercial pills, diets based on a fruit, very restrictive in calories involving injections of chemicals or eating tape worms are a big NO.

Even if you do get away with it now keep in mind that what you do to your body now you will pay for it in the future and it will be the double the price.

3# Get the support of the adults in your house

Well it makes sense to get the cooks back up. You may have all good intentions to shred the extra weight but if the cook of the house keeps making tasty but fattening foods it is going to be hard. In addition, these adults who you want to be defiant to, do know some things as well. They can help you, support you, show you tips which worked for them, cook your food and make it easier when things are hard.

If that doesn’t convince you do think that studies show that people who have support tend to lose more weight and sustain the loss than those who don’t. Is your mum, dad or aunty on a diet? Why not join in with them and make it a family affair?

4# Get plenty of sleep

Ok some teenagers don’t lack of sleep, and if anything they need to spend more time awake. However, if late TV watching, or social media surfing, texting and studying do keep you awake then you need to rest more.

Sleep is vital for your body to regenerate and secret some hormones. Lack of sleep is connected with weight gain amongst other problems. Apart from gaining weight do remember that you are growing and you need these hormones and processes to develop healthily.

5# Throw sugar out

That may be the hardest thing to do for some people. Sugar is probably a big part of your weight problem. Sugar is not only the one you add in your tea or coffee or hot drink or cereal.

Most things contain sugar. Obviously you will not manage to eliminate every bit of sugar out of your diet but cutting out all the extra is a good start.

Cut down on:

  • Sweets such as cakes, deserts, gateau, lolly pops, ice creams biscuits, chocolate etc.
  • White refined carbs such as pasta, bread, bagels, cereals etc. Opt for the healthier wholegrain instead but in moderation.
  • Adding sugar such as in drinks, yogurts, cereals etc. A lot of them do contain quite a lot of sugar on their own.

You will be pleasantly surprised how many calories you will be actually saving and how much healthier you will be. Apart from your weight you will notice the difference in things such as your skin.

6# Cut down on liquid calories

Liquid calories are the most deceptive ones as they add up considerably and you will not even know it. What are the liquid calories then? All those drinks which get consumed through the day and most of the time go unnoticed but they do contain calories.

Think of all the milkshakes, hot chocolates, fizzy drinks etc. In simple thinking a coffee may not contain many calories on its own but by the time you add full fat milk, sugar, chocolate sprinkles or caramel, whipped cream etc it can end up like a fat and calorie crime.

Especially calorific are all the fizzy drinks which tend to be heavy on sugar. A can of coke contains 142 kcal; 250ml of orange juice contain an average of 118kcal. Add all the drinks you have through one day and you may find a scary amount of calories but also you will find a very good and easy way to cut your calories.

  • Water is the best to keep you hydrated and replenish your thirst.
  • Usually recommended and low in calories is green and herbal tea.
  • Try replacing fizzy drinks with diet or sugar free options, but in moderation as sweeteners have been controversial. Just cut down on the fizz all together is recommended.
  • Spare the sugar you add in your drinks.

7# Throw out fatty, junk food

Again a very hard thing to do, it is almost like mission impossible. Unfortunately junk food does taste good and it is addictive, and it is available everywhere. If your body has learned to consume junk food from a very early age then it is hooked on it and getting your body to change its habits is not easy, but not impossible!

You will need to be dedicated and convince yourself on how much you want this. I am not trying to dishearten you here, but I am being honest. It is not good to embark on a weight loss plan with false ideas so be prepared and get motivated.

My best motivation for you is your health but if you have other motivational goals go for it. *Read tip no 7 for some ideas on changing your diet.

Cut down on:

  • Take away meals such as chinese, fried chicken, pizzas etc.
  • Fast food such as burgers and chips, hot dogs, fried chicken etc.
  • Deep fried foods, anything deep fried in massed of oil including vegetables and including pre-packaged, pre-cooked foods. Frozen oven chips are not a healthy option as they have been pre-deep fried.
  • Processed foods. They usually come out of a tin or they do not resemble anything natural.
Note * An average bacon double cheeseburger contains around 760 calories, 45gr of fat (69% of daily value) and 8gr of sugar. If you make it into a meal with chips, sauce and soda the calories will add up. However, an average person needs around 2000 to 2500 kcal (depending on gender, age and activity level).

8# Change you habits slowly and gradually

The best way to lose weight in the long run is to change your habits all together. Lifestyle changes do last longer and tend to have a higher rate of success. You can follow a diet even if it is for a few weeks but if you go straight to old habit after you reached your goal, then you will only be putting the weight back on.

Plus think of your health and the benefits you will get out of healthy eating. Where do you start though? How can you start eating greens when you never tasted one and oh dear chips taste by far better….

Instead of going cold turkey on cutting down junk food, try doing it slowly as it may be easier to handle.

  • For example replace instead of remove. Replace deep fried and/or precooked chips/fries with thin cut roast potatoes (homemade not frozen) cooked in a drizzle of olive oil.
  • Add on things slowly. Half the portion of chips or pasta you would normally have and add a small portion of vegetables or salad.
  • Try things. Maybe one vegetable doesn’t go with your taste? Then try another. There is a big multicolour fresh world out there.
  • Go for fruit to satisfy a sugar craving.
  • Lobby the cook of your house for healthier cooking options. Oven cook, boil and grill instead of frying. Cut down on oil and margarine when cooking etc.
  • Schedule junk food in your week i.e. once a week or on a Saturday only or even just once a day if too difficult and stick to it.

9# Exercise

Dreaded by most; the exercise. I will say that exercise is great for health but it may not sound very motivating for most teenagers. So I will add that apart from health think how fit you will look at the end, and how good the clothes will look on you.

Exercise doesn’t have to be a torture or boring or even exercise as such. It can be fun and interesting. There are all sorts of different activities you can choose from such cycling, walking, running, swimming and so on.

You can add some of those in your daily life such as cycle or walk to school, or you can join a group i.e. running or swimming group, dancing or handball group. Loads to choose from or you could make your own group with your friends.

Exercise will burn calories and help in burning some fat and in the long run will increase your metabolism and the calories you burn overall. If your worry is just a couple of lbs increasing your physical activity may be sufficient enough to achieve this without ‘going on a diet’. However, if you have more than a few lbs it is best to combine a weight loss plan with exercise for better results.

10# Beat the bullies

This is no 10 but really it should be no 1 and ok not physically start beating people here but mentally. Like I said already high school, college or university can be quite hard for some people.  We all know that if different in any way can attract the kind of attention we don’t want.

A lot of people, teenagers and adults alike, can fall into a vicious cycle of repetitive behaviour and emotional eating. Being teased or looked down on by other teens can make you feel worst and feel helpless and have low esteem.

No matter what your size, shape or anything else be confident in yourself. Don’t stop yourself from doing something just because you feel you are not worth it or you feel you don’t look nice.

Forget about the next celebrity or magazine who tells you how to look or what to wear. Empower yourself, be yourself, don’t let other people stop you and look at the bigger picture.

I believe in being a healthy weight for good health, but that does not necessarily translate in being thin. Appreciating who you are and learning to love yourself is a very important life element.

Tips to gain a healthy body & lose some stubborn weight

Tips to gain a healthy body & lose some stubborn weight

I thought it maybe about time I put these common mistakes and often obvious answers down on paper to help any of you who are struggling with the weight loss battle.
At times you may just feel that drastic measures are needed to be made, when you are in this circle of incorrect behaviour you don’t often see beyond your cloud of doubt, what you are doing as wrong but just so eager to fix your past unhealthy mistakes you continue down this road of unhealthy decision making and making it harder for you to fix.
You maybe thinking to yourself, what are these drastic measures or incorrect behaviours? You may already know them. Lets face it, we all know what is right and what doesn’t work, there are loads of books on this but sometimes its good to stop and re-assess, Lets take a look…

We need to think long term, not a quick fix!

You need to think for your future, for your body’s future and for your future lifestyle to be a total change for the better – your future’s health relies on it. But by that, we must only do this slowly, change things little by little, no big steps, little tiny changes slowly chipping away at the old habits to create new, healthier habits.
You may think about starving yourself to lose a couple of kilos or go on a liquid diet, or reduce your meals to half their size because the last few days you over indulged. This is dangerous in the beginning, as your body will think there is something wrong. Fight or flight mode (think caveman days), Survival mode. Your body will hold onto all its resources – fat and all just in case there is some danger ahead. It will store everything you have as it doesn’t understand why you keep yo-yoing up and down with your intake. But even more so, you won’t cope with these dramatic changes, you will end up binge eating again at some point and then the cycle just keeps going on and on. This only means you put on more and more weight and your goal slips further out of reach.

Sleep!!!

This is underestimated. Sleep is one of the major factors in not being able to lose weight. We need to ensure your sleep patterns are regular and around 8hours each night.  By sleeping at odd hours your body can’t regulate nor metabolise properly, thus slows down. Our bodies require a routine, a schedule to keep the balance and to ensure an effective metabolic rate. The hunger hormones: leptin – tells the brain to stop eating, reduces & ghrelin in the tummy – stimulates hunger – increases. Meaning inadequate sleep lowers levels of leptin and increases levels of ghrelin.

Meal time portion sizes:

If you like cereal for breakfast, it’s very easy to double the amount of what a normal portion is supposed to be. A normal portion is actually very small!  However if you choose a boiled egg or egg and grain toast, or low fat yoghurt with fruit, this is very nutritious and filling and you will be less likely to over dose on the quantity of cereal poured into a bowl with too much milk. Try to use smaller bowls and plates for all meals and use the palm of your hand as a guide as to the amount of protein your meal should contain. Opt for grilled or poached or baked protein with vegies, salad or legumes for dinner and you will heading in the right direction.

Snacking:

This is okay so long as they are a healthy snack just to help the hunger until next meal time. Snacking on a piece of fruit or some low fat yoghurt is a good choice or perhaps boiling some eggs, peeling them and storing them in a container in the fridge for a high protein snack. A small tin of tuna in springwater on a Corn Thin or Cruskit is a great hunger stopper too. Nuts are good but be careful. Only one handful once a day – they are great oils for your body but too much will not help the weight come off!  The best nut snack is Walnuts or Almonds or Flax Seeds, as these contain omega 3 oils which the body can breakdown effectively.

Reduce then lose BAD FATS in your diet:

Minimise saturated fats from your diet (fatty meat, dairy & coconut, palm, peanut oils) as they raise blood cholesterol putting us at risk of heart disease and stroke. No more battered fish and chips – they maybe tasty but also evil and will not help your waist-line! Good oils (poly & monounsaturated) such as small amounts of olive oil, avocado, omega 3 oils in salmon, tuna and walnuts – much better alternatives. These fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and also boost our immune systems.

Limit Carbohydrates:

Carbohydrates are not bad as they are essential for energy, however it is easy for us to overdose on these. Limit your carbs by aiming to only have carbs once or twice in a day (grained toast or muesli for breakfast or sandwich or rice or pasta at lunch time) – depending on your exercise schedule. If you are more sedentary, less carbs are required if not at all. If you are more active, your body will need them for fuel. But aim to have no carbs after 4pm and only salads or vegies with your protein for dinner – but don’t over do it on the protein just because the carbs aren’t there! Of course, If you are doing an endurance training session in the morning then carbs are essential at dinner time. In time your body will feel great and you will crave them less and less.

More whole foods:

Aim to purchase and consume natural foods and less refined or processed foods. Straight from the source – Fruits, vegies, grains– the land or when buying packaged foods check the labels – if the ingredients are not from a natural source then put it back! Stay clear also of foods with sugar added. This is usually the case with yoghurts that say low fat. Low fat is good but only if the packaging states that sugar has not been added. In particular stay clear of any product that contains corn syrup, fructose or sucrose. Fructose can only be metabolised by our liver and our liver is already overloaded therefore these sugars end up being stored as fat. Glucose is the only sugar that many parts of our body can break down or metabolise i.e. brain, kidneys, and muscles for energy/fuel.

Don’t eat at night:

If you are a night owl or just coming home late from a night out, go straight to bed with a glass of water, do not open the fridge or pantry – these late night snacks are a big disaster to your metabolism. See sleep!!

Water intake:

Water is an essential part of our diet, our body contains approximately 60% water therefore we need to maintain and rehydrate to allow our body to process and function effectively. Rule of thumb is for every kilo of body weight you should consume 30ml of water. i.e. 60kg person should drink  1.8litres of water daily. Big note – this does not mean fizzy or soft drinks – water intake only!!

Alcohol and Coffee:

Most of us love coffee or alcohol of some sort. Best guidelines for not over indulging is a little each day is healthy but too much is not. Aim for 1 coffee a day and 1 – 2 glasses of wine a night. Red wine is of greater benefit to our bodies due to the antioxidants it contains for a healthy heart. If you prefer white however aim for dry wine – it contains lower alcohol, therefore lesser calories. Dry wine such as Hunter Semillon or Australian Riesling – better for weight loss as much less sugar and fewer chemicals – stay clear of Sauvignon Blanc – loads of sugar!!

Exercise without distraction:

What I mean by this is that it is quite common for people to go for a run or exercise with an ipod, listening to music. What this can do is distract your body and mind into tricking it that it is not exercising at all! I know you must now be thinking – come on don’t be ridiculous – sometimes this can actually be the case. So when you exercise, be present and accept what you are doing, embrace the pain, move through it, build on your endurance, your threshold will improve and your body will start to show results.

Consistency:

This is my most important tip!!! You must schedule your exercise time into your diary, and make it a priority. If you just plan in your head, mostly always something will override this plan. But if it is scheduled in your diary, you will see it there, clear and simple, ensure nothing else gets scheduled over the top and stick to your diary! Every week, every few days, do what is written and your chore will start to become a normal part of your life, just like brushing your teeth.

My last but not least tip would be to invest in a Pedometer:

These are brilliant. The best ones I have heard of our myfitnesspal or Fitbit. Cheaper ones can be bought, but please don’t go for the cheapest – they are not reliable and will break or give you false information. Basically by using a pedometer each day, you can see how many steps you actually take each day. If you work in an office or drive, you will realise how little steps you take. Your aim is to achieve 10,000 steps each day. Firstly, see what you currently do. It may only be 2,000 steps but that is okay. All you need to do is increase this little by little such as an extra 500 steps each day until you reach the ideal quantity. 10,000 steps is what is required to help keep you fit and active! This is a lifestyle change for the better, to ensure you live a long, healthy and injury free life – especially preventing premature ageing and early onset of old age injuries.

Coconut Water For Weight Loss: How It Sheds Off Those Extra Pounds

People wanted to stay fit. Well, of course, that’s human nature my friends. People hit the gym, take on slimming pills, go on diet, cut down unhealthy eating, indulge on natural fruits and vegetables, do everything in the name of weight loss. Little did they know that one natural way of burning fats is by drinking COCONUT WATER.
Coconut water can be pretty tricky but under the right circumstances, it can be a powerful weapon in your weight loss program. Here’s how:

Pure coconut water promotes good hydration and increases our body’s metabolic rate.

Proper hydration has been scientifically proven to help with weight loss. If you are hydrated, you are less likely to store fat in your body to help raise your body temperature. Because if you are dehydrated, your body temperature drops a little bit. During dehydration, your metabolism is affected negatively in this way, which makes you feel starving all the time.

More so, if you have good hydration, your skin will look healthy and glowing. So, drink coconut water for weight loss and achieve a brighter, glowing skin.

Coconut water has low-calories and can be substituted with other sweet drinks.

A glass of coconut water has only 46 calories. Drinking coconut water in place of a high-calorie drink, like your flavored sodas, can help you lose weight over time because you’ll be consuming fewer calories overall.

It contains saturated fat.

Coconut water contains 3% of saturated fat. It is better to drink coconut water than eating a diet high in fat, because high fat diet can make it harder for you to safely lose weight.

Coconut water fights against cholesterol.

According to a, 2006 issue of the Journal of Medicinal Food, an animal study on the benefits of coconut water and cholesterol levels, researchers have found that rats that fed coconut water has a lower overall “bad” cholesterol levels, namely low-density lipoproteins and triglycerides. In turn, the rats’ healthy or “good” cholesterol — high-density lipoprotein — increased with the coconut water diet. Results were promising, however, scientists concluded that a further long-term study of this finding on humans were necessary.

Using coconut water for weight loss makes sense because today, there are plenty of gym clubs that will advise you to drink coconut water post work out. Hence, there’s no need to spend on with those expensive artificially flavored drinks as you will consume more sugar than you have been trying to burn burn during work out. These drinks have definitely high calorie content, whilst coconut water controls it.

Turmeric Benefits for Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer affects the ovaries that are situated on either side of the uterus. This cancer is not easily detectable until it has spread to the abdomen and pelvis. Once it has spread, it is difficult to treat and usually proves fatal. Unfortunately symptoms of ovarian cancer often mimic other conditions. Some of them are – abdominal pressure, bloating, pain, pelvic discomfort, persistent gas, indigestion or nausea, constipation, frequent urination, loss of appetite etc.
Some factors may increase the risk of contracting ovarian cancer like family history, gene mutation, increasing age, women never being pregnant or previous cancer of the breast, rectum, uterus or colon. Pelvic examination, tissue testing and ultrasound are some ways to detect ovarian cancer and treatment consists of chemotherapy and surgery.

Turmeric & Ovarian Cancer

The usage of turmeric and its chemical compound curcumin is not unknown for it is popularly used as a spice and for medicinal purposes in many Asian countries. Researchers are conducting studies on the various benefits that curcumin offers in protecting the immune system and fighting different types of cancer.

According to studies turmeric can interfere with molecular pathways which are responsible for cause and growth of cancer. I have already discussed this in my previous article on Cancer. Here are some of the studies which are done to explore relationship between turmeric and ovarian cancer.

In a 2007 report on the in-vitro research on ovarian cancer, it was concluded that curcumin mayturmeric for ovarian cancer offer therapeutic benefits. These were test tube studies when specific cancer cells were targeted. When curcumin and chemo were given together, it was found to be less drug resistant. Curcumin is an anti-inflammatory agent that can inhibit COX-2 enzyme, therefore benefiting various cancer therapies. Further human studies are required.

Studies have found that when ovarian cancer cells receive pre-treatment from curcumin they seem more vulnerable to chemotherapy. The delivery could be in the form of turmeric nano-particles that make the cancer cells less resistant to chemotherapy. This pre-treatment with curcumin also means that lower doses of radiation and Cisplatin are required to suppress proliferation of ovarian cancer cells. This helps patients suffer from fewer side effects and lesser toxicity.

For this study, ovarian cancer cells resistant to Cisplatin were pre-treated with turmeric and this was followed by exposure to radiation or Cisplatin. Then colony formation and MTS (biochemical cell) assays were examined to determine the effect of curcumin on cancer cell growth. The curcumin that was administered was a special nano-particle formulation that was conjugated specifically for cancer cells with monoclonal antibody. Results showed that pre-treated cancer cells required lower radiation levels and lower doses of cisplatin to inhibit growth. Apoptosis (cell death) of cancer cells occurred after pre-treatment. The conclusion was that pre-treatment with turmeric increases chemo/radio sensitization of ovarian cancer cells resistant to cisplatin via multiple molecular mechanisms. Hence, using curcumin could provide therapeutic benefits for patients with ovarian cancer.

Another study was conducted to demonstrate that curcumin could inhibit transcription factor NF-kB, therefore suppressing angiogenesis and inflammation. An orthotopic murine ovarian cancer model was used to study the benefits of turmeric in this study. The study was performed on laboratory mice. It was found that curcumin suppressed proliferation and activation of NF-kB in vitro. In vivo dosages of 500mg/kg were found sufficient to suppress NF-kB, decrease angiogenic cytokine expression etc. There was a 49% and 55% reduction in tumor growth in the 2 in vivo curcumin models compared with control group. When curcumin was combined with docetaxel, there was 96% and 77% reduction in tumor growth compared to the control group, therefore showing its benefits for ovarian cancer.

Based on these studies role of turmeric in ovarian cancer looks positive and promising.

Dosage

General dosage (not only for ovarian cancer) of standardized curcumin powder is 400-600mg thrice daily. You can also take cut root – 1.5-3g daily, fluid extracts – 30-90 drops daily or dried, powdered root 1-3g daily. The specific dosage for each illness can be prescribed by a doctor.

Precautions

Turmeric is safe when used it in appropriate doses. When taken in excess, it can cause nausea, indigestion, diarrhea or dizziness. Pregnant women can suffer from over stimulated uterus or menstrual bleeding and must avoid turmeric supplements. Those with symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), bile duct obstruction or gallstones, those on diabetes medication or taking anti-coagulation drugs must avoid turmeric supplements for their conditions could worsen. Turmeric could slow clotting of blood, hence those undergoing surgery must refrain from using turmeric for a few weeks before and after surgery.

9 Things That Happen To Your Body When You Add Pineapple To Your Water

Pineapple, pineapples, pineapples! Comedian Kevin Hart is famous for a story where he explains how the word “pineapples” would help him get out of a sticky situation.  But we’re happy to share that the actual fruit can help your body is so many ways, it’s incredible. Here are just a few…

Bromelain is an enzyme that has anti-inflammatory properties. Bromelain helps the body get rid of toxins by fighting off inflammation which impacts all the tissues and organs in the body. Regular consumption of pineapple can help to treat mild forms of arthritis and sports injuries by reducing inflammation and pain.

2. Helps with weight loss

Due to the fiber contained in pineapple, it takes more time to digest, thus causing a prolonged feeling of satiety. Drinking pineapple water in the morning prevents sugar and fat cravings.  Thiamine helps boost your body metabolism by converting carbohydrates into energy.

Home Remedies to Stop Excessive Underarm Sweat

The body must perspire. Perspiration is one method the body uses to eliminate toxins and other impurities, but excessive perspiration can be a problem. Excessive underarm sweating may stem from stress, diet or medications, among other causes. Commercial-grade antiperspirants and deodorants only block some of the underarm sweating or mask the odor. Neither treats the cause or eliminates the symptoms for any user, and that is especially so for users with excessive perspiration. Home remedies can help the body eliminate toxins, prevent excessive sweating, and absorb the moisture before odor-causing bacteria invade the area.

Bath Salts

Make a bath salt to unclog the pores and draw out impurities. Aid your body in toxin removal so the body does use excessive measures to remove contaminants. Mix 1½ cups of borax, 1 cup each of sea salt, baking soda and an essential oil of your choice. Choose lemon, lime, geranium, orange, spearmint, or peppermint essential oils, and use only one essential oil per remedy mix. Try another essential oil the next time you make a mix, if you wish. Pour ¼ to ½ cup of the remedy into a warm or hot bath and soak for 10-20 minutes. Adjust the temperature of the bath water as needed for personal comfort, because the bath salt works in cooler water temperatures too. Consider using the remedy in a cool bath during the summer months or when running a fever.

Vinegar and Oil

Mix 4 oz. of red vinegar with 30 drops of an essential oil into a container with an airtight lid. Cover, shake and set aside for a week with the cover on, letting the essential oils seep into the vinegar. Shake the bottle for at least 10 seconds each day, keeping the container out of direct sunlight and humidity. Use after one week, pouring 3 tbsp. into each bath. You may use any type of vinegar, but red vinegar is attractive in a cosmetic jar and has the same cleansing properties as other types of vinegar.

Steam Baths

Regular steam baths can eliminate toxin buildup in the body, thereby eliminating excessive underarm sweating. Steam baths also relax the mind and body, reducing stress hormones and other needless elements created in the body. For healthy adults, a morning or evening steam bath can put body odor at bay, but steam baths may cause dry skin, especially in the winter months. Take a 10 to 20 minute steam bath daily, if your skin permits, and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Body Powder

Body powders absorb moisture under the arms and kill odor-causing bacteria. Homemade body powders are strong enough for a man or woman, and you can customize the smell suitable for each. Use cornstarch, arrowroot, or white clay as a powder base when combining ingredients. For men, mix ½ cup powder base, 4 tbsp. of fine sandalwood powder, with three drops each of sandalwood, jasmine and lime essential oils. For women, combine ½ cup powder base, 3 tbsp. of sifted dried lavender flowers, with three drops each of rose, lavender and orange oil. Mix into a lidded container, shake, and set aside for five days so the oils penetrate the powder and compose the scents. Apply to the underarms after a bath or shower.

Oral Compounds

Just as a pharmacist compounds medicine in the pharmacy, you can compound your own oral remedy to curb excessive underarm sweating. Mix 2 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar with 1/8 tsp. of baking soda into a small cup, such as a shot glass or one of the medicine caps supplied with cold or cough syrups. Drink at least one per day, and up to three per day for severe, insistent body odor. Apple cider vinegar contains good bacteria that eliminate bad bacteria, reducing the toxin overload that produces excessive perspiration. Baking soda reduces acidity in the body, neutralizing the pH balance of the blood.

Deodorant

Your underarms will still sweat, but good hygiene requires the use of deodorant to soak up the moisture and prevent bacteria from invading the area. Commercial antiperspirants and deodorants do not soak up the sweat and only mask odors, unlike home remedies or homemade deodorants. To make your own deodorant, mix five drops each of cypress, sage and coriander essential oils, 15 drops of sandalwood essential oil, 1 tbsp. of alcohol and 2 oz. of witch hazel or aloe vera juice into a spray bottle. Shake the bottle well before each use, and spray two to three pumps directly to the underarms. Avoid contact with eyes and other mucus membranes. For an alternative application, saturate a cosmetic sea sponge with the remedy and apply to the underarms. Reapply as needed.

Diet and Nutrition

Exercise and diet play a role in the accumulation and elimination of body odors. Eat a diet rich in green leafy vegetables and fiber, while incorporating regular exercise into your daily agenda. The armpits do not have access to air like the other pores on your body, so perspiration does not evaporate well. Exercise allows all pores to take on the chore of eliminating perspiration, reducing the need for excessive underarm sweating.

7 Natural Cures For Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a condition in which our bones gradually become weak and fragile. This is basically an age related disorder that is caused due to decreased bone mass, which causes the bones to become porous and increases its susceptibility to fracture.

Osteoporosis typically affects the hips, spine and wrist. It is often referred to as ‘silent disease’ as bone strength is lost gradually and there is hardly any symptom of pain before you realize that you have osteoporosis. Osteoporosis develops due to low level of calcium, phosphorus and other minerals which are needed to keep the bones strong.  While women experiencing menopause are more vulnerable to osteoporosis, men too can suffer from this condition after the age of 50. You can prevent osteoporosis by building strong bones at a young age. However, it can also be treated by taking calcium enriched diet, medication, regular exercise and natural therapies.

Osteoporosis Treatment

Besides genetic predisposition, lack of proper nutrition in your diet is also responsible for osteoporosis. According to physicians, eating healthy foods is absolutely necessary to prevent and treat bone loss. Once you are diagnosed with osteoporosis, proper food choice is the most important part of your treatment recommended by your health advisor.

Calcium Enriched Diet

The best way to fight and treat osteoporosis is to take a diet that essentially contains sufficient amounts of calcium, magnesium, vitamin D3, trace minerals and vitamin K2 which are bone building nutrients. For the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, calcium is the most important nutrient. Try to get 1000 to1300 mg of calcium per day from your diet. The shortfall can be covered by taking calcium supplements along with calcium that contains the additional ingredient that strengthens bone. The best food sources from where you can get calcium are low fat milk and cheese, fat-free plain yogurt, soybeans, calcium-fortified tofu, collard greens, white beans, almonds, kale and broccoli.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is required by the body to absorb the calcium you are taking efficiently. Vitamin D helps calcium to travel to different parts of body. Vitamin D can be obtained from sunlight but we tend to avoid too much sun exposure to protect our skin from the UV rays of the sun and like to get it from food and supplements. Some foods that contain vitamin D are fatty fishes like salmon, sardines, herring, mackerel, soy milk, yogurt, egg yolk and UV treated mushrooms. As there are very few foods from where you can get vitamin D, take vitamin D supplements or multivitamins that contain vitamin D. Doctors recommend 800 to1000 IU as daily requirement of vitamin D for healthy adults.

Magnesium

Magnesium is equally important for your bone health. Magnesium and calcium jointly work to strengthen the bones. This mineral plays a supporting role in treating and preventing osteoporosis. Magnesium works to counter balance metabolic acid and absorb calcium by the body and strengthen the bones. The food sources of magnesium include pumpkin seeds, brown rice, millet, spinach, cashew, sesame seeds, sweet potatoes, flaxseed, beans and wheat germ.

Potassium

Potassium helps in slowing down the degeneration of bone mineral density that befalls as you age. Potassium can be obtained from various fruits, vegetables and other foods. The foods that are excellent for your bone health and contain significant amount of potassium along with other nutrients are apricots, cantaloupe, papaya, banana, honeydew melon, prunes, plums, avocados, raisins, tomatoes, carrots, lettuce, almonds, pistachios and beans.

Vitamin K2

Recent studies have found that vitamin K2 is also important for your bone health. It helps to slow down the process of bone loss and risk of fracture later in your life. This vitamin is needed for the formation of osteocalcin, which is a kind of protein found in the bone. Vitamin K is not produced by the body naturally. You must get it from your diet. Proper intake of vitamin K can lower the risk of fracture. So include vitamin K rich green leafy vegetables like kale, spinach, lettuce, broccoli, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, parsley, okra and watercress in your diet. If you are taking medication for blood thinning, then consult your doctor before incorporating them in your diet because vitamin K is considered as the natural blood thinner.

Vitamin C

Studies reveal that eating vitamin C rich foods can slow down the process of bone loss and help the body to produce collagen – a protein that contributes in strengthening bones. Such foods include oranges, strawberries, grapefruit, lemon, pineapple, guava, mango, cauliflower, cabbage, tomatoes, hot chili peppers, Brussels sprouts and summer squash etc.

Exercise

Weight-bearing exercises like walking, climbing stairs, running, dancing, playing tennis, yoga etc. in which the body tries to work against the gravity can help to treat and prevent osteoporosis. Forcing your bones to work against gravity encourages your body to produce and increase bone cells and bone mass and make them stronger. So exercise regularly. Guard your body against osteoporosis by incorporating these bone building nutrients in your diet.

What Are the Benefits of Sit-Ups & Push-Ups?

Overview

A regular weight training and exercise routine doesn’t have to involve going to the gym or owning equipment. You can build muscle and get your heart pumping anywhere, using your own body weight. Situps and pushups help tone and develop lean and strong muscles. Situps work your core and lower back muscles; pushups work upper and lower body muscles. With regular practice, these exercises will help you maintain good stamina, balance and health.

Abdominal Muscles

Situps target your abdominal muscles -- particularly the rectus abdominis -- while pushups also aid in strengthening your core muscles, which are engaged while helping to support and stabilize your body. A strong core will help you carry out other activities with more ease, such as lifting a box or playing tennis.

Upper Body Muscles

Build upper body strength with pushups. With every pushup, you’re strengthening and toning arm, chest, shoulder and back muscles. Regular pushup exercise helps you gain more control over your daily movements because of the increased upper-body muscle tone and strength.

Stability and Balance

Regular situp and pushup workouts train your muscles -- including your abdomen, back, shoulder, arms and hips -- to work together, which creates more overall body stability and balance. A solid upper body and core allows you to perform other types of exercise with more confidence. For example, yoga and Pilates routines incorporate similar exercises that engage both the upper body and core muscles. Performing situps and pushups, therefore, adds to the overall balance and poise that yoga and Pilates devotees gain.

Health

Performing a regular routine of situps and pushups helps sustain your overall health. For example, well-toned abdominal muscles improve your digestion and posture, which in turn helps to improve the flow of oxygen and blood throughout the body. Strong core muscles can prevent lower back pain. Doing pushups and situps also helps you maintain muscle mass throughout your life.

Appearance

A regular routine of situps and pushups can create a shapely and finely sculpted physique, flatten your abs and give you the much-desired six-pack look, with a muscular but lean upper-body silhouette.

From standing push-ups to pelvis tilts: Top 10 safe fitness tips for pregnant women

EXERCISING when your expecting can have substantial health benefits and even shorten labour, so here's some great bump-friendly workout tips from Fitness First
Pregnancy shouldn't get in the way of staying fit and healthy and doing a bit of daily exercise is actually recommended.

In fact, keeping active can reduce back pain and swelling, speed up recovery after giving birth, ease stress and help speed up the birthing process.

However, common misconceptions that woman should just sit back and put their feet up are still holding pregnant ladies back from exercise.

In fact, a survey conducted by Fitness First and YouGov found that, 53 per cent of people do not believe that exercise can boost general wellbeing in pre and post natal women and only 25 per cent of women think it’s safe to run during pregnancy.

Here Fitness First’s Group Exercise Manager Charlotte Banfield has come up with 10 fitness tips to help you through your pregnancy…

1. Don't try new things

Never try something new during your pregnancy and always listen to your body as everyone reacts differently towards exercise during pregnancy.

2. Running is safe

As long as you are healthy, it is safe to run right up until labour - just don't compete with your pre-pregnancy running achievements.

Ensure you are hydrated and wear supportive running shoes.

Stick to running on flat surfaces during your second trimester as your centre of gravity will shift as your bump grows, leaving you more prone to a slip or or fall and a fast walk may be a better choice as your due date approaches.

3. Strengthen your tummy

Your abdominals and core, including your pelvis floor should be strengthened throughout pregnancy as this will aid in labour, delivery and recovery.

How to Naturally Cure Body Odor

Body odor is an embarrassing problem for many people, but it doesn't have to be. With a few changes to your diet and lifestyle, it's usually fairly easy to get rid of body odor and prevent future problems with body odor.

Change your diet. Avoid heavily processed foods and artificial foods. Try eating more raw foods. Even small changes, like eating raw vegetables instead of steamed vegetables can make a difference. Avoid foods with strong odors, too, such as onions and garlic. The scent of these foods can seep through your pores.

Drink at least eight glasses of water per day. If you already do, aim for 10 glasses a day or 12 per day if you're very active.

Mix 1 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide with 1 cup of water, then wipe it on the areas where the bad odor is present, such as your underarm, feet or groin. This solution may help kill the bacteria that is causing the odor

Treatment for Asthmatic Bronchitis

Asthmatic bronchitis is typically caused by external agents such as viruses entering the respiratory airways and causing irritation. It occurs in people who have asthma, which weakens the bronchial tubes or immune system and makes them more susceptible to developing respiratory infections. Treatment for asthmatic bronchitis is simple but must be addressed to prevent further discomfort or damage.

Types

Asthmatic bronchitis is either acute or chronic. Acute is typically accompanied by viral or bacterial infection in the lining of the bronchial tubes. It lasts a few days to a few weeks, depending on the severity of the infection. Chronic asthmatic bronchitis is considered much more serious because the infection time generally runs anywhere from three months to two years.

Significance

During the course of the respiratory infection, the body continues to produce high levels of phlegm that congests bronchial tubes and is expelled from the body via coughing. Because asthmatic medication has little to no affect on the symptoms caused by asthmatic bronchitis, alternative methods of healing must be instigated to speed recovery.

Symptoms

Asthmatic bronchitis is generally accompanied by coughing, shortness of breath and wheezing. Other symptoms may include fatigue, headaches, mild fevers and chest pain. Individuals with asthmatic bronchitis also have reported the sensation or sound of rattling in their chest while they were breathing.

Treatment

For asthmatic bronchitis caused by bacterial infection, antibiotics can kill bacteria in the lungs and prevent further damage. For infections caused by viruses, rest as much as possible and avoid caffeinated or alcoholic drinks to allow the body's immune system to run its course without interference. Humidity has been known to lessen the symptoms of asthmatic bronchitis by loosening mucus located in the bronchial tubes. Relocating to a more humid environment may improve your condition. Room humidifiers and hot towels can serve a similar and effective purpose.

If symptoms worsen, seek a doctor's advice. Hospitalization, medical monitoring and steroids may be required to lessen the severity of an infection. Most symptoms of asthmatic bronchitis will not require hospitalization and will lessen over time with prescription medication or as the immune system adjusts the illness.

Prevention and /Solution

Because asthma tends to weaken or deteriorate respiratory airways, preventive measures often yield limited results. Avoid airborne irritants such as pollution and secondhand smoke, as these will likely aggravate symptoms. Under no circumstances should you smoke or chew tobacco if you have asthma, as these can often lead directly to lung infection.
