Fever in babies and children is quite common (after all, it is the body's way of handling a viral or bacterial infection) but can be disconcerting nonetheless. Natural home remedies are considered to be the safest and most effective method to treat a fever. Although a doctor should be consulted if the fever continues for more than 3 days, rises above 101 degrees F or if your infant is younger than 6 weeks, there are some fairly simple methods that can be tried in the comfort of your own home.
Fluids are essential in treating a fever, so be sure to provide your child with fluids multiple times during the day. Try a variety of options such as flat soda or diluted apple juice. If drinks aren't tempting, try popsicles as an alternative to beverages. Healthy foods that are easily digestible, given in small portions, are also beneficial. This can include, but isn't limited to, rice, grains, bananas, cereal, miniature marshmallows, crackers, dry toast or plain bread, depending on the age and eating abilities of your child.
A tepid, or room-temperature, bath (limit to one a day) is recommended. Another option is bathing the child in diluted yarrow tea (drinking the tea is also beneficial but is too bitter for most children).
Here are a few different herbal and natural options that are less traditional.
Fill a pitcher with cold water (not ice cold) and add a few drops of Eau de Cologne. Soak a washcloth and wring it out. Place it on your child's forehead for 2 minutes and repeat. You can do this three to four times a day for at least 20 to 25 minutes each time.
Another options is soaking your child's socks and washcloths in a mixture of 1 tbsp.apple cider vinegar and 1 cup of water. Put the socks on the child's feet and the rags around her wrists. This can reduce the fever by a degree within minutes and can be repeated a short time later to help reduce the fever even further.
Check with a homeopathic physician for possible remedies for your child (they differ based on causes and the age and weight of the child) as these tend to be very effective and safe ways to treat illnesses. Belladona, pulsatilla and elderflower tea are some frequently recommended solutions.
