7 Amazing Health Benefits Of Grits

Do you love eating grit cakes, but are always guilty of cheating on your diet? Well, we cannot vouch for the health benefits of oily, fried grit cakes, but grits have various health benefits.

Given here are the 10 amazing health benefits of Grits for you to check out:

1. Protein

1 cup of grits contains 1 gram of protein. However, you have to remember that corn grits mostly contain proteins without many amino acids. So these are incomplete proteins and if you are looking for a high protein food, you may look at some other source. However, if you consider grits as a cereal or breakfast food, it contains enough protein to give your body a healthy start. To amp up its protein content, add milk or other sources of protein to grits cereal.

2. Fats

1 cup of grits contains 91 calories, which is less than that of oatmeal. 1 cup of corn grits also contains less than 0.2 grams of fat. So if you are on a weight loss diet, you can replace your morning oatmeal with grits porridge.

3. Folate

Folate is an important nutrient that our body needs. It helps in boosting our immune system and protects us against diseases like anemia and even cancer. In short, folates help repair DNA (1). Every adult should consume at least 400 mg of folate every day. The requisite amount for pregnant women is 600 mg. Pregnant women are often told to take folate supplements because they prevent neural defects and help in developing myelin sheaths (a protective covering of nerves) in the fetus. Eating 2 to 3 cups of corn grits can contribute to the entire amount of folate required.

4. Vitamins

Corn grits contain lots of vitamins, especially vitamin B. In fact, 1 cup of cooked grits contains 20 percent of vitamin B1, 25 percent of the folate and one-sixth of the vitamin B3 you require every day. The vitamin B complex that corn grits are rich in is very important to our health. It helps in metabolizing and absorbing the food we eat. It also helps in converting fats and carbohydrates into energy. Vitamin B1 also regulates and optimizes cardiovascular functions by producing more acetylcholine, which is a neurotransmitter that relays messages between muscles and the brain (2). Along with fatty acids, it also protects the eyes and delays cataract development. Vitamin B3 treats insomnia and has been used to treat depression and schizophrenia(3). It also lowers cholesterol and triglycerides, thereby protecting the heart from any disease.

5. Minerals

1 serving of corn grits contains 7 mg of selenium and 1.2 mg of iron. Iron is present in our body in hemoglobin, which helps in carrying oxygen throughout the body. It is also present in muscles as myoglobin. It helps in diffusing oxygen throughout the muscle cells. If your body’s iron is depleted, you may become anemic. At advanced stages, it may cause renal failure. Selenium, on the other hand, regulates and controls inflammation. It may even inhibit the onset of rheumatoid arthritis. Its intake has been linked to lower rates of prostate cancer. Along with vitamin E, it can act as an antioxidant and prevent the formation of free radicals, thereby fighting skin cancer and preventing sunburns.

6. Muscle Gain

Corn grits contain plenty of leucine – 1 serving contains 542 mg of it. Leucine is an amino acid that triggers protein synthesis and, thereby, enhances muscle growth. In the elderly, muscle loss is a real problem. For them, a diet that contains a lot of leucine can stem this loss.

7. Weight Loss

Weight loss is one of the best health benefits of grits, as it keeps you feeling full for a longer time and satisfy your appetite. As a result, you will benefit a lot from this if you are on a weight loss regimen. It also provides quick energy, so a bowl of grits would help you work out for much longer. Instead of a sugar-filled, calorific energy bar, a bowl of grits is much more beneficial for those who exercise to lose weight. It is rich in iron, so it helps in oxygen circulation to the fatigued muscles through blood hemoglobin. As a result, you will not tire out easily.

Healthy Grits Recipes

In Southern American cuisine, grits are doused with butter or margarine to impart wonderfully rich taste. But you can make low-calorie dishes out of grits too.

Cheese Grits

Bring water up to a boil and slowly drizzle in grits until well blended. Now cook this mixture with a pinch of salt, paprika, and garlic powder until it thickens up in low heat. Finally, stir in some grated Cheddar until it melts. It is best eaten with some sautéed shrimps.

Grits With Corn And Onion

Start by sautéing chopped onions and sweet corn. Once cooked, add some milk, water and salt and bring to a boil. Quickly add the grits and lower the heat, simmering until the mixture is thick and creamy. Top it with chopped green onions and parsley. Add salt and pepper according to taste. To make a healthy breakfast, this is all you need. For a more decadent dish, you can add cheese or butter.

Grits With Egg And Spinach

Cook the grits in a similar manner as above. In another pan, wilt some spinach with just a dab of margarine and season with salt and pepper. Poach an egg. Serve the grits topped with spinach and egg for a filling, healthy breakfast.

Healthier Alternatives

If you can’t have corn grits for breakfast, cream of wheat, which is a whole grain cereal, is a healthier alternative. It is made of wheat semolina. You can also eat amaranth, which is a gluten-free grain-like substance and very nutritious. Quinoa can be used instead of grits, although you need to alter the cooking time as quinoa takes longer. Oatmeal contains more protein, so those who want a proteinaceous breakfast can replace grits with oats.

By consuming grits, you are bound to feel more healthy and satiated than you ever have. What’s more? Grits aren’t as boring as you think. With some ingenuity, you can make a cup of grits into a sumptuous dish that your family will relish.

Mushrooms: Health Benefits, Facts, Research

Mushrooms, though classified as vegetables in the food world, are not technically plants. They belong to the fungi kingdom and although they are not vegetables, mushrooms provide several important nutrients.

It's common knowledge that the key to getting enough vitamins and minerals in the diet is to eat a colorful variety of fruits and vegetables - the more color, the better. However, this philosophy tends to leave mushrooms in the dark. In many cases, if a food lacks color, it also in turn lacks necessary nutrients. However, mushrooms - which are commonly white - prove quite the contrary.

This MNT Knowledge Center feature is part of a collection of articles on the health benefits of popular foods. It provides a nutritional breakdown of mushrooms and an in-depth look at their possible health benefits, how to incorporate more mushrooms into your diet and any potential health risks associated with their consumption.

Possible health benefits of consuming mushroomsMushrooms
Mushrooms, though classified as vegetables in the food world, are not technically plants. They belong to the fungi kingdom.
Consuming fruits and vegetables of all kinds has long been associated with a reduced risk of many lifestyle-related health conditions.

Countless studies have suggested that increasing consumption of naturally-grown foods like mushrooms decreases the risk of obesity and overall mortality, diabetes, heart disease and promotes a healthy complexion and hair, increased energy, and overall lower weight.

1) Cancer

Mushrooms contain just as high an antioxidant capacity as carrots, tomatoes, green and red peppers, pumpkins, green beans, and zucchini.4

Selenium is a mineral that is not present in most fruits and vegetables but can be found in mushrooms. It plays a role in liver enzyme function, and helps detoxify some cancer-causing compounds in the body. Additionally, selenium prevents inflammation and also decreases tumor growth rates.2

The vitamin D in mushrooms has also been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells by contributing to the regulation of the cell growth cycle. The folate in mushrooms plays an important role in DNA synthesis and repair, thus preventing the formation of cancer cells from mutations in the DNA.2

2) Diabetes

Studies have shown that type 1 diabetics who consume high-fiber diets have lower blood glucose levels and type 2 diabetics may have improved blood sugar, lipids and insulin levels. One cup of grilled portabella mushrooms and one cup of stir-fried shiitake mushrooms both provide about 3 grams of fiber.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends 21-25 g/day for women and 30-38 g/day for men.

3) Heart health

The fiber, potassium and vitamin C content in mushrooms all contribute to cardiovascular health. Potassium and sodium work together in the body to help regulate blood pressure. Consuming mushrooms, which are high in potassium and low in sodium helps to lower blood pressure and decrease the risk of high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases.

Additionally, an intake of 3 grams of beta-glucans per day can lower blood cholesterol levels by 5%.3

4) Immunity

Selenium has also been found to improve immune response to infection by stimulating production of killer T-cells. The beta-glucan fibers found in the cell walls of mushrooms stimulate the immune system to fight cancer cells and prevent tumors from forming.3

5) Weight management and satiety

Dietary fiber plays an important role in weight management by functioning as a "bulking agent" in the digestive system. Mushrooms contain two types of dietary fibers in their cell walls: beta-glucans and chitin which increase satiety and reduce appetite, making you feel fuller longer and thereby lowering your overall calorie intake.3

10 Most Common Habits that Damage Your Kidneys

Kidneys are one of the most important organs in the human’s body. They detoxify the blood and help the body to filter out the waste material through urine. Moreover, their main functions include eliminating excess water from the body, or retaining it when needed. They regulate the levels of phosphate, calcium, and other minerals in the body.

Kidneys help in the regulation of blood pressure as they produce important hormones needed for this function, as well as in the production of red blood cells which carry important nutrients and oxygen throughout the body.

As you can see, kidneys have numerous important functions in our body, so it’s essential that we keep them function properly. Usual symptoms of kidney issues include: changed quantity and color of the urine, vomiting, dizziness, breathing issues, anemia, fatigue or tiredness, bad breath, feeling cold most of the time, sudden pain in the body, and itchy skin.

Visit your doctor if you notice some of these symptoms to exclude the possibility of kidney disease. Kidney problems can be caused by different reasons, but people have adopted many habits that can as well cause severe damage to their kidneys.

Your kidneys can be damaged by the following 10 common habits:

1. Delaying the Urge to Urinate

One of the main causes of kidney damage is not emptying your bladder on time. In this way, the urine will remain in the bladder for a longer period, allowing multiplying of the bacteria breeding in the urine. These dangerous bacteria can lead to kidney or urinary tract infection. Retaining the urine can cause urinary incontinence and renal failure as it increases the pressure on the kidneys.

If you are one of those who habitually postpone the urge to urinate, it’s time to change that before it’s too late.

2. Insufficient Intake of Water

Your kidneys can be severely damaged if you don’t drink enough water. If your body lacks water, your blood will become concentrated so there will be less blood flow to the kidneys. This impedes the ability of kidneys to flush out the toxins from your body, and the more toxins in the body, the more health problems.

The recommended daily amount of fluid consumed by a healthy adult is 10 to 12 glasses at a minimum. In this way, the body will be well hydrated and the kidneys healthy. On the other hand, don’t consume too much liquid as this can harden the function of kidneys.

3. High Intake of Salt

Consuming too much salt on a regular basis can lead to serious kidney damage and other health issues as well. 95% of the sodium consumed through food is metabolized by kidneys. If you consume too much salt, your kidneys will have to work much harder in order to excrete the excess salt. This can result in reduced function of your kidneys, leading to retention of water in your body. Water retention can increase the blood pressure as well as the risk of kidney disease.

According to many studies, the intake of salt raises the quantity of urinary protein, which is another risk factor for developing kidney disease. Every amount higher than 5 grams a day is harmful for both, kidneys and your general health. One teaspoon of salt is approximately six grams.

4. Regular Use of Analgesics

Many people take analgesics, or over-the-counter painkillers, to lower inflammation and fever, and to control pain. However, this habit can cause damage on kidneys, and on other organs as well. According to a research, over-the-counter analgesics can decrease the blood flow to the kidneys and worsen their functioning. Long-term or heavy use of analgesics causes acute kidney injury or interstitial nephritis which is a chronic kidney disease.

Those who have reduced kidney function should consult their doctor before taking any painkiller. Analgesics should be taken for the shortest time and at the lowest dose possible, even for those with normal kidney function.

5. High Protein Diet

Excessive intake of protein-based foods like red meat can raise the risk of kidney disease. Kidneys have another important role, and that is to metabolize and eliminate nitrogenous wastes from the body, which are by-products of the protein digestion. High intake of protein chronically raises the glomerular pressure and hyper filtration, thus increasing the metabolic load of kidneys, which increases the risk of developing kidney issues.

Therefore, the best thing for your kidneys is to limit the amount of red meat consumption, and those who already deal with some kidney problem should immediately stop consuming red meat since it can aggravate their problem.

6. Drinking Too Much Alcohol

Alcohol is a toxin which causes a lot of stress on the liver and kidneys. That’s why drinking excessive amounts can lead to severe kidney damage, so you should always try to drink in moderation.

If you drink excessive amounts of alcohol, the uric acid will be stored in the renal tubules, causing tubular obstruction which raises the risk of developing kidney failure. Furthermore, alcohol leads to dehydration and impedes the normal kidney functioning. The healthy amounts of alcohol consumed on a daily basis are 1 drink for women and older people, and 2 drinks for men.

7. Smoking Cigarettes

Smoking is not only bad for kidneys, but for almost every organ in our body, as stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The relation of smoking and kidney disease has been shown by many studies. As the American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP) explains, smoking is the number one cause for ESRD (end stage renal disease).

Smoking increases the heart rate and blood pressure, as well as decreases the blood flow and narrows the blood vessels in kidneys. This unhealthy habit can aggravate existing kidney disease, and can speed up the loss of kidney functions. The best way to prevent this is to stop smoking, as this habit is harmful for every part of your body.

8. Consuming Too Much Caffeine

If you consume too much caffeine, your blood pressure will be increased, which will burden the function of kidneys. Over longer periods, this can cause kidney damage. Kidney International has published a 2002 study according to which the consumption of caffeine is strongly related to kidney stones. Caffeine can raise the excretion of calcium in urine.

Nevertheless, most people won’t have any problem if they consume caffeine in moderate amounts. So consuming 3 cups of tea, 1 to 2 cups of coffee a day is perfectly fine. But you shouldn’t forget the other sources of caffeine like energy drinks, cocoa, soft drinks, chocolate, and some medications, so make sure you limit their amount too.

9. Ignoring Common Infections

Ignoring of coughs, colds, flu, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, and other common infections, can cause serious kidney damage. Those with kidney disease have often reported to had no rest when they have been sick, and these are often weather sensitive people who often get ill.

If you don’t treat your common infection, the viruses or bacteria can cause kidney damage. Therefore, whenever you get a common infection, treat it properly and on time. Rest your body and take your antibiotics properly.

10. Lack of Sleep

A lot of people ignore the importance of proper sleep because of their busy lifestyle. A 6 to 8 hour sleep is crucial for a person’s overall health. The organ tissues renew while you are sleeping, so if you don’t get enough sleep you will interrupt this process, which will lead to damage of many organs, including the kidneys.

According to many studies, improper sleep can cause increased clogging of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and high blood pressure, which raises the risk of kidney damage. Always try to keep a good balance between work and rest, and to adopt healthy sleeping habits. In this way, you will protect your kidneys, and your overall health.

Say Goodbye to Ganglion Cysts Forever With These 5 Natural Home Remedies!

Ganglion cysts are a common condition that affects the tendons and joints of the ankles, wrists, fingers and bottoms of the feet.

They tend to be quite small and are filled with a dense liquid. For most people, they are pretty small but it’s not uncommon for a person to have one as big as an inch in diameter. They feel hard or even spongy – all depending on the size of it. If you are already suffering from ganglion cysts, then you probably already know that these can cause pain, discomfort, tingling and numbness.

Researchers are yet to figure out the reason why these occur, but many think that it’s caused by an irritated tendon or joint.

Ganglion cysts tend to occur in people who are between 15 and 40 years of age, they occur more in women and athletes that put their joint under constant pressure. If you have ever had an injury in your joints or tendons then you are more likely to have this condition. Epsom salt is a great way to remove a ganglion cyst as it can easily remove it in just a couple of days. It decreases the amount of pain and inflammation.

To make this mixture you’ll need to dissolve 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt into a warm glass of water and mix it thoroughly. Soak a cotton ball in this mixture and place it over the cyst. Repeat this mixture for 5 days or until you begin to see results.

Topical remedies are very effective against this condition but if you want to speed up the healing process and reduce the pain and swelling, you should try to eat more anti-inflammatory foods as well. Try eating more turmeric, ginger and salmon. If even after everything the cyst is still very painful and increases in size, you should definitely consult with your doctor.

20 Deadly Cancer Signs Most Women Neglect

Never wait for a checkup to see if cancer is present. See what your body says and see some changes like unexplained and odd signs. These are the most common:

1. Short breath/wheezing- this is a sign of lung cancer

2. Chronic cough/chest pain- a few cancer types like tumors and leukemia, cause bad coughs or bronchitis imitation.. some cancers like the lung one cause pain in the chest that goes down the shoulder and the arm.

3. Often occurs to get fevers and infections- this could be leukemia, cancer of the blood where blood cells are infectioneus where the bone is marrow. This issue creates strange white blood cells and removes all shields and energy of the body.

4. Hard time swallowing- this could mean throat/esophageal cancer that could go hand in hand with lung cancer.

5. Swelling in lymph nodes, neck, armpits and groin- these enlarged nodes mean the lymph system is affected and could be cancer.

6. A lot of bruises and bleedings that don’t stop- this means abnormal issues; when the red blood cells are affected it can be leukemia. With time, the leukemia cells increase more than red cells and platelets so the blood cannot transfer enough oxygen and clot.

7. Fatigue/weakness- in general this is not scary. But if it happens all the time it could be some cancer that has no obvious signs. If you feel tired for no reason, talk to a doctor.

8. Abdomen weight gain and bloating- usually women with ovary cancer report such bloating and weight gain in the belly. All out of a sudden.

9. Satiety and low appetite- another sign for cancer and even ovary cancer, women reported less appetite than normal.

10. Pelvic pain/abdomen pain- this pain and cramps around the pelvis go with bloating too and mean ovary cancer. Leukemia also causes this from the enlargement of the spleen.

11. Bloody stool/rectal bleeding- this is a result of colorectal cancer. The blood on the TP is a reason enough to seek medical advise.

12. Strange weight loss- this could be sign of rectal cancer and digestive organ cancers. It might
spread to the liver and reduce appetite since the body cannot expel waste material properly.

13. Upset belly/belly ache- these cramps also mean colorectal cancer.

14. Red/swollen, sore breasts- this is obvious breast cancer.

15. Nipple change- the most common change before a final diagnosis is made. The nipple might be inverted, flat or sideways.

16. Painful and strange periods or in between period spotting- this might be uterus cancer. Do a trans-vaginal ultrasound if you have heavier periods.

17. Swollen face- some lung cancer patients have puffy face, swollen or red face; this might be because lung tumors(small) can block chest blood vessels and the blood flow doesn’t reach the face.

18. Sore/skin lump that is crusty or bleeds- the melanoma, skin cancer or basal cell melanoma/squamous cell carcinoma. Check every tiny skin area.

19. Changed nails- some strange nail changes can indicate cancer too. Brown/blackish dots under nails can be skin cancer. Also the nail curving down the finger over the tip also could be lung cancer, but not certainly. If the nails are too pale and whitish, it can be liver cancer.

20. Back pain and lower back right side pain- a lot of cancer patients indicated this as liver cancer sign. Also breast cancer can do this since the tumor presses back to the chest or spine and ribs.
